Not trying to start anything, but where do the Leafs stand. Did they take a step back? - 51_Killer
I think that in the short term they may have taken a bit of a step back leading up to this offseason.
However, I think one of the reasons Shanny likes Dubas is because Dubas is presumably very patient, and quite young, and probably not in a hurry to sell the farm for the chance at a cup.
Big gambles as far as mgmt goes but could have big payoff. |

Assuming he follows Lou. Seems likely given the timing, but who knows.
Anyway, and I mean this seriously, what's so great about him? |

The good news is that we can all stop fantasizing about Tavares becoming a Maple Leaf.
Hunter is apparently great because he drafted Mitch Marner. Outside of that it's hard to tell if he's had a significant impact on the quality of the prospects in the organization. |

there were 3 guys trying to be a GM
a 75 yr old with lots of experience from a different hockey era
a youngin who is supposedly a rising star & smart
a middle aged scout with no GM experience

Why? cause Hunter and the Leafs parted ways?
I wasn't aware that Tavares was draftable. |

I've always felt that the real brains behind the draft was not Mark Hunter, but in fact all Reid Mitchell. Reid Mitchell is the great man behind all of the glorious picks. All of the bad ones were definitely Hunter stepping in pig headedly. Dubas and Mitchell okayed every single great pick. Unlike Hunter who kept swinging and missing. Much like the misses Hunter had at the draft, he won't be missed in the management group. One rumour even mentioned that Lou Lams and Hunter wanted to trade Matthews for some Gud Pros to appease Babcock. So glad they're gone. They're toxic. |

it was idiotic to think Tavares could come to Toronto given the cap and his salary being north of 10 mil per year.
Tavares is a non rumour to anyone who keeps salaries in mind. |

Matthews (no-brainer), Marner, (good pick, but it was either him or Hanifin and both are going to be good for a long time) Liljegren(was ranked 3rd overall for the longest time, and fell to the Leafs. A no brainer at #17). Drafted Dermott, but they traded a shot at Konecny to get Dermott.
Time will tell on the rest, but we'll see how, or if Keaton Middleton, Eemeli Rasanen pan out.

I do think Mark Hunter is decent at drafting, but not the best ever. The Leafs have just been so bad at drafting in the past it was nice to have someone that was an idiot. I think he will be missed, but I dont see him going to take that over for the Islanders for example, they have draft just fine.

Lou stays another few years, and Hunter stays as well.
in any case, Hunter is not a good fit imo to be GM for Leafs anyways.
No surprise this happened - you know how Toronto media and fans are going to react when start of Dubas is less than spectacular though.. |

Hunter traded for Tavares in London - PatC80
Truthfully, i dont think the GM would be that big a deal for Tavares. Lou going there could as their management sucks, but hell be looking at teams that have a chance moving forward with him, along with the situation, not the GM. |
