Agreed, it’s not like Mickey Moniak.

Brien Taylor won 18 straight Cy Young awards in both leagues except for 1996, when he lost the AL Cy Young to Todd Van Poppel.

It's weird, but I distinctly recall listening to news of those trades trickle out over sports radio when they went down that and being in disbelief that Richards got traded.

Carter, I understood, and kind of expected at the time, but not Richards.

And that off-season got even weirder when they added Jagr.

- johndewar

That was the last time I posted in this forum.... When Richards and Carter got traded. After the season ended and they signed those ridiculous long contracts and both refused to stay dry during the cup run I knew they were gone. I argued with MJL for days and he kept telling me there was no way they'd be traded... 😂
Those were some of the best trades homer pulled off. Both needed a change in scenery and Richie was just getting his painkiller addiction going. He always had those pinned looking eyes that opiates give you. That will go down as one of homers greatest moves.
It took a couple of years to show fruit his time the schenn trade will take a few years to show.
But yes.... I couldn't have been happier to get rid of both of those party boys. They were too comfortable here in Philly and the change was necessary.
I loved Richie and had two of his jerseys but the man stopped competing and sadly lost the battle against addiction. But we have coots and soon frost (and Jake, and simmer) as some solid core pieces from that trade.

It is pretty amazing what they are doing but from what I recall from past expansions, they were given a much better opportunity to select good players. I remember expansion drafts being limited to aging vets. At least that is how I remember them.
- FlyerFan16

I agree. The other expansions were more challenging to field a competitive team, but that doesn't take away from what the Knights have accomplished.

Where did Tainter Jainter get drafted?

Or did he sign for the maximum international signing bonus? His name sounds a little Ecuadorian, I believe.

He was drafted in the 25th round to the Pirates. Clawing through pro ball, trying to find his way. Slashed .271/.302/.430 and finished strong in AA ball. Second year of pro ball he's playing in AAA, honing his hitting skills.

I feel like he's thrown out 40% of would be base stealers. He's the real deal. What a story out of a SoCal boy in the 25th round. Nothing but hard work and a dream.

The problem is when you miss on 4 out of five of your last first round picks.

EDIT INCOMING

4 of their last 5 you say. Ok so I'm guessing the one that hit was Nola. Here the names of basically every notable player out of the 1st round since 2012, in a sport where the best players notoriously are hardly drafted in the higher rounds.

2012: No first rounder, highest pick was a comp pick

2013: Kris Bryant (2), Aaron Judge (32) and uh...I dunno...Colin Moran (6)? Does he count? Austin Meadows (9)? Does he count? He just came up. The Phils picked JP at 16 that year.

2014: Nola (7), Trea Turner (13), and uhhh...Luke Weaver at 27? idk

2015: Phils got Kingery in the second round this year. Swanson went #1, Alex Bregman (#2), Benintendi (7)

2016: Senzel went #2, but he hasn't even made it to the bigs yet and neither has basically anyone else. This was the Moniak draft

2017: don't even bother

Altuve- undrafted
Arenado- 2nd rounder
Goldschmidt: 8th round
Betts: 5th round
Pujols: 13th round
Cabrera: undrafted
Kluber: 4th round
Felix Hernandez: undrafted

I mean come on man. You can't rip the phillies for not "hitting" their first round picks in a league where like 10% of all drafted players reach the majors. Come on bruh

That's kinda who I had in mind, as well.
- johndewar

Even NAK comes to mind slightly. His drive wasn’t questioned, but he had a quiet / disappointing season last year and was sorta written off or forgotten about but here he is this season tearing it up 5V5 with minimum PP time. Sometimes these prospects just hit a little bump along the way.

I wonder how good of an NHL player I might have been if I had better hands, could skate better, and was bigger?

I think I've stopped by 4 out of five days.

You're welcome.

P.S. "4 out of five" -- you really should pick numerical or word. Mixing them could cause rifts in space time.

Tainter Jainter was one of the best relief pitchers of all-time, possibly the second best of all time after Mitch Williams. He retired last year.

This new Tainter Jainter is an imposter, and I will not stand for it!!!

I am not too worried about Rubtsov after watching his last two games. (Though this is still a small sample)

Majority of NHL teams that reach the Stanley Cup final have a Norris level type defenseman on their roster. Who is the Vegas defenseman that fits that bill?

Other than James Neal what forward on this roster has a history of being a legit goal scorer? How many players on their roster have 100 career goals prior to this season?

With a few exceptions, this Knights team was built with players other teams didn't want.

- PLindbergh31

really not an accurate way to state the situation. I'd say players that their old respective teams were willing to lose before other players within their organization. Really think the Flyers aren't going to want a player like Hagg for the next expansion? that's the quality of player they could lose.

My concern after watching both games was that he doesn't play with any sense of Urgency. I wouldn't say he's always floating but she sure doesn't ever explode for the puck either.

He's got tools but I question the drive.

that was said of Hagg too so hopefully he finds that gear

So man up and tell us what your account name was back then?

The idea that the trades were made due to partying were as ridiculous now as it was back then. Numerous players including Danny Briere objected to dry island and it was a big mistake by Laviolette. Nobody thought they were getting traded after being signed to long term deals. The idea that you could look at his eyes and diagnose a condition from that is laughable and absurd.

Yes, I completely concur. It's playoff hockey...you wouldn't think you'd have to look for it. Not saying its a lost cause.....but you never go from that to a Konecny type. Doubt anyone ever told him to ramp it up.

If Rubstov can play the exact same kind of game in the NHL he would make a good solid 3rd line player in the NHL.

He wins his board battles and seems to be in good position but I just don't see anything that makes him standout. I was watching this game and followed #98 throughout the whole game, nothing about his game screams 1st round NHL pick.

- MBFlyerfan

Traded back in the draft to get him. The Flyers estimated he should go higher. The Russian drug scandal is what set him back by scouts. Is this what I was hearing?

We clearly need to get bigger, which Logan Stanley could have brought size and some skill. Kieffer Bellows is another kid who is looking good i that WHL, who plays LW, wear we are clearly weak at but passed on.

I'm really hoping Morgan Frost becomes exactly what we are hoping he'll be.

I'm not a fan of trading back in the first round.
