These Tanner blogs are sheer comedy...
Caps poured it on last night, but sadly too late, and lost.
They blew a two game lead, both of which where road wins, and now are on the ropes and might very well be done against of very good and deep TBL team.
Vegas, as much as I can't stand the fact they have made it this far, is doing this well because they are a good team. Not just because they have a good goalie.
McPhee was brilliant in putting together a very fast team, and stock piling picks and prospects... job well done.
Donaldson and Vladi Jr. both play 3rd base... not gonna keep him or Donaldson up as a DH. So... Pick your poison.

The Fleury theory is great, except when you take into consideration he missed 25 games with a concussion and the Knights went 16-8-1 using their backup and a couple of minor league goalies. The same story for Holtby/Grubauer. I think you're undervaluing the team's contribution to a goalie's save percentage and overall stats. Fleury is having a Conn Smythe playoffs but wouldn't be the same if you put him on any team. - 13sundin13

Goaltending is indeed a TEAM game. Although the goalie is the KEY ingredient. Still, you are absolutely correct. Vegas plays a solid, well-coached, high-pressure game with VERY LITTLE breakdowns that cause breakaways or odd man rushes. If...no, I mean, WHEN Vegas wins this series and advances to the finals, it will be because Vegas, THE TEAM, is better than Winnipeg.
(And, I thought the Jets would win this handily. But, after WATCHING all the games closely, Vegas deserves all the credit in the world. Solid, well-coached team!!!) |

Baseball is weird when it comes to prospect promoting and their farm systems. I don't know all the details but they have like 4 farm teams. A, high A, AA, AAA. Apparently AA has more young up and comers compared to the AAA which has a bigger mix of career minor leaguers and prospects.
I heard Vlad is the youngest player in the AA league this year. His defense is not at the MLB level and certainly not at the MLB all-star level that he could become. He would probably be DH for the Jays and that is wasting a lot of development opportunities.
I wouldn't mind if he played the full season in AA/AAA but I think it would be amazing if they called him at for a playoff run at the end of the season. He can be DH for a couple of months. - Njuice

Why, because once upon a time Marc Andre Fleury - an NHL vet who lost his job to a rookie and was roundly considered to be extremely overrated - suddenly had, at age 33, one of the best seasons by a goalie in NHL history?
You're entitled to your opinion, but I think being a GM is more than just one season and more than just wins and losses. Ron Francis built one of the best young blue lines in the NHL and his recent trade with the Blackhawks was one of the best trades anyone's made in recent memory.
George McPhee is having a really lucky time, but his team will suffer for this in the future. Also, the wins are hiding the fact that he made one of the worst blunders in the NHL this year: Tatar for a first, second and third, only to have his coach refuse to play him. - james_tanner1
You are aware that he was injured for a large part of the season and only played in 46 games which would make it a fact there is a very good team in front of him that got them into the playoffs with 109 points.
Which would mean the season isn't all due to MAF, and maybe due to the fact McPhee picked and designed a very good team from top to bottom. However you would have people believe that he got lucky 20+ times because the players he picked in the expansion draft worked out?
PLUS: I still stand by this: Winnipeg vs Washington final.
I wonder if the Caps know how (frank)ed they are now since you picking teams to win, usually means the opposite happens. |

Completely agree on Carolina, Tanner. I thought their roster was great and with great defensive responsibility (like Vegas is doing now) I imagined them going far this year. But.... their goaltending has been horrendous and still they were close. Only thing they don't have going for them is really not enough skilled forwards, but they haven't had many significant picks as of late. That can change with this draft |

A big part of LV's game is superior coaching. Gallant who was cast off from Florida for not embracing the analytical aspect of the game. Tanner cheered the move at the time painting Gallant as a dinosaur despite success with the Panthers. The following season the analytics based coaching and front office in Florida managed to steer the up and coming team into a disaster and Las Vegas were the recipients of a very good coach.
What surprises me is how this year when the Caps are closer to the real prize than ever before Tanner is no longer touting the presidents trophy winning Preds as the real NHL champions as he's crowned the Caps in the past while at the same time dismissing the Stanley cup as a frivolous season ending tournament? |
