It's not tunnel vison, the defense is still weak, why would he move any of those pieces. Not 100% he moves ROR.

What it comes to are what are your best trade assets that are considered a "surplus"?

Talented Dmen are hard to find and the Sabres don't have enough of them. So trading our top 2 or 3 guys would probably make a hole. Guhle, Risto, Scandella. So they're out. The rest of them are low value or negative value.

Our goalies are worthless. They're out.

You're not trading Eichel or Mittelstadt. Okposo has low value because of his contract, the verbage in his contract and his output this year. I'm optimistic he'll come back much better but that's just me. So he's possible, but out for now.

That leaves Reinhart and ROR as the only valuable pieces. That's a young, top 6 winger who can think the game as fast as Eichel can play it. We don't have enough top 6 wingers, and trading him for another winger is kinda useless.

Hence, we're left with O'Reilly. No one knows (I have doubts) that CM is ready for #2. I personally don't think he is yet and probably needs a year of being sheltered. But it could be worth it if ROR can bring back a veteran center that can play 2 for a year/defensive zone specialist and a top 6 wing.

The ROR "bashing" is getting overblown.

There are things that many posters like about his game and many things the same posters don't like.

Take for example me:

I like that he can play big minutes. I like that he is a consistent 60 point player. I do like that he takes every key faceoff.

I don't like his contract. I don't like certain qualities about his leadership or lack there of.

I like that he has a ton of value around the league.

I like that any deal that involves him should be an overpayment (or at least a good haul) and the Sabres should win out on the trade.

This isn't a post to bash ROR, this is a post that can look at the make up of the team currently, can look at the system the head coach wants to play, and can look at who on the roster would fetch the most in a return that may or may not be part of the long term plans of the GM.

Obviously Jack is in the long term plans.

By process of elimination ROR is the one that I would want to see dealt FOR THE RIGHT DEAL.

Maroon on the Devils and the Ducks still had a positive possession rate. This team severely lacks possession drivers. He can be one of them for a reasonable salary. He wouldn't be that much for a guy who can score you 35-40 points a season.
