Exclusive: Lou Lamoriello will be hired to run Islanders’ hockey operations

Lou Lamoriello will be running the Islanders’ hockey operations in a matter of days, sources confirmed to The Athletic on Monday. The former Devils and Leafs general manager has been rumored to be coming in, either as president of hockey operations, GM or both to replace Garth Snow, and now it’s a matter of when and not if.

Two sources also confirmed an online report from the French-language website Hockey30 that Lamoriello met with John Tavares last week, clearly in anticipation of assuming control of the Islanders. Tavares, as you all know, will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1 after playing out the final year of his contract with the Isles in 2017-18.

Where this leaves Snow, the Isles GM for the previous 12 seasons, is unclear. He and head coach Doug Weight arrived back on Long Island on Monday after spending last week at the World Championships along with Eric Cairns, director of player development, and other front-office staffers. Snow’s contract runs for at least four more years with a steep buyout clause.

But Lamoriello, who was removed as Leafs GM on April 30 in favor of Kyle Dubas, will be fully in charge, sources say. It isn’t clear if the 75-year-old Lamoriello will be bringing anyone with him to join the Islanders front office, which already has his son, Chris, in place as assistant GM.

The meeting with Tavares last week was a clear sign that Islanders co-owners Scott Malkin and Jon Ledecky are still heavily invested in keeping their star and captain. Putting Lamoriello, a three-time Stanley Cup winner with during his historic tenure with the Devils, at the top of the front office adds a level of credibility that can only help the team’s chances of retaining Tavares, who has been craving that sort of respectability for the organization.

Lamoriello hasn’t yet been announced to be leaving the Leafs, where he had a contract as a senior advisor, but clearly Toronto president Brendan Shanahan had no intention to force Lamoriello to stay on. Malkin has been meeting regularly with Pat Brisson, Tavares’ agent, and those two most likely arranged the sit-down.

The Dec. 20 announcement that the Islanders won the right to develop an arena at Belmont Park was a big step towards that respectability, especially in Tavares’ eyes. “For my situation, it’s really exciting news. I’m not going to say it’s going to change or ultimately make my decision, but everything that’s involved in my daily life plays into it and going to the rink, playing games is a big part of that,” Tavares said at the press conference that day.

Of course, the Islanders went just 17-24-7 after that joyful afternoon, sinking to a second straight lottery season and sixth in Tavares’ nine seasons on the Island. The Isles hold the 11th and 12th picks in next month’s NHL Draft and it will now be Lamoriello’s charge — with help from Snow’s amateur scouting staff, which begins its draft meetings on Tuesday — to find new blood for the organization, through the draft and possibly through trades as well.

And now for the first time since Charles Wang made the unlikely decision to hire Snow fresh out of his NHL goaltending career on July 20, 2006, the Islanders will have someone new in charge.

If you read all comments, you’re basically repeating my original comment... to think that Rangers don’t already know if they have a shot at Keefe would be naive. GMs talk.
- junaka3

Here is your exact comment, "junaka3", (punctuation & all), which I had earlier replied to:

"I'm just guessing.maybe Gorton has had discussions with Shanahan? Keefe is under contract, doubt they'd wait to talk to him unless they already had an idea Toronto would allow him to leave. As I said, maybe they have future plans for him. I'm sure they talk."

1) There was no word that Gorton ever spoke specifically with Shanahan on Keefe's availability at all.
2) Shanahan WAS NOT the Leafs GM until April 30th.
3) Nor did Gorton discuss Keefe with LOU LAMARIELLO, WHO WAS THEIR GM UNTIL RELIEVED ON APRIL 30th, & then reassigned as a "Senior Adviser" in their front office, as per his 2015 signing agreement. That matter in fact was to occur after three years, (and thereafter last for 3 or 4 years). Then Lou was even rumored to want to join the Islanders front office in some capacity, due to his son I Believe, employed by them.
4) We see now that the Leafs used that plan with Lamariello, due to having Kyle Dubas, in their minor league system being groomed to become their GM someday. But that day occurred much earlier than any hockey experts had expected, since Mark Hunter was presumed to be the favorite thought of to land that position after Lamariello. It also put an end to Keefe leaving them at all while under contract.

So, since Gorton never talked to Shanahan, along with the Leafs not having named a new GM until May 11th, due to their postseason ending only a few days prior to Lamariello being relieved as GM on April 30th, then how could any GM have possibly "ALREADY HAD AN IDEA THAT TORONTO WOULD ALLOW HIM (i.e., Keefe) TO LEAVE", (as you wrote), & while he is still as of today, coaching his Marlies playing in their postseason?
You next stated likely correctly that "they (the Leafs) have future plans for him" (for Keefe), but ended separately saying, "I'm sure they talk". Who's "THEY"? It surely was not, or would not have even later on been Shanahan talking with Gorton or any other NHL GM.

Unless Uncle Lou can get that arena built at Belmont in the next 2 years, I don't think it will really change Tavares' mind if he really wants to leave. Re-signing with the Isles means he will be playing Barclays/LI Coliseum for the next several seasons under less than optimal conditions. I mean, who seriously wants to shuttle back and forth home games between 2 arenas?
While it is a good move for the Islanders franchise to bring in Lamoriello, I don't think its going to convince JT to stay. We will see...

Do you have a guy that you really want the Rangers to draft, Vin?

At I'm really hoping for Wahlstrom or Hughes to be there, outside of the top I can't figure out who's going where and I feel like 9 is getting the top 8's leftover, glad we don't have #10 cause IMO there's a drop off, things change with the combine

And if that's the case I can't be pissed, unfortunate circumstances, that's what getting useless points costs you , I'm for trading up but it really depends on the deal, if we're just including either Namestnikov, Spooner, or Zucc (sorry Swedish Pete) than I'm good with it, gonna be a fun month coming up.

What he did in Toronto was a result of what Shanahan had in place already and I'll never give a GM credit for drafting 1st overall

That would be like saying "The Rangers reaching the Stanley Cup final was entirely the result of lucking out on drafting HOF goaltending by accident and I'm not giving any team credit for playing in front of a brick wall".

Nobody even know's what his position is going to be yet or what exactly is going to happen with dickface Snow. He's as likely to go out looking for a GM to hire as he is to do the job himself.

I guess we wait and see where Snow lands in this shakeup. My guess is on the street unless the owners decide to demote him to some lesser task, like jock cleaner.

Well the reports are that Lamoriello will assume full control of hockey ops. That could mean he wants to be an overseer of things and appoint a new GM, or let Snow keep his job but essentially be stripped of his decision making power. Who knows, it's early to speculate...but this is as much about Snow losing his power as it is about who they brought in. They're already in better shape than they were an hour ago.
