Canes fans don't like Faulk and would love to trade him. Perspective.
He's a PP specialist and defensive sieve. I'd rather just have Gudas as the better ES player, let alone a top 20 pick and former 1st rounder. I don't get why we need to sell the farm for overrated d-men.
Unless we are trading for DougIE Hamilton or signing someone like de Haan, I'm just not that interested. We have good enough d-men. We have a coach who prefers to play the lesser d-men we have. That's the issue. |

I'd agree with that description of Sandin. His hands are like a forward's for a d-man, he's a natural puck mover, real heady, creative, pretty stocky for a sub 6 foot kid. He's competitive and can handle himself in his own end too. Just his overall skating -- speed, burst, edge work -- is kind of flat and average. It needs to improve. I think he could be a really good 2nd pair/PP guy for some team in the back half of the 1st as well. I would prefer a forward with the way the draft is breaking, but he'd be one of my first d-man choices at 19. Do wonder if you could trade down for him though. I think a lot of the d-men in that range could be traded down for. Jonny Tychonick is another one who impressed me a ton at the u18s, who I'd group with Sandin.
I said it the other day, but as much as I think Hayton is a conscientious center who cares about his off puck play (although he's no Bergeron, like I've heard ridiculously said), I'm not particularly impressed by his play with the puck. He has slick hands and a good shot, but he doesn't play on the puck that much, and when he does, I think he plays slow and doesn't really think ahead with it or as a passer. I think the talk about his hockey IQ is a bit overblown. I would not be enthused if he was the pick at 14 tbh. A kid like Robert Thomas went at 20 last year with similar stats and a similar profile, and I think people want Hayton to be Thomas this year -- who clearly had a huge D+1 year. But I don't think he's anywhere near as good or has the upside Thomas did last year. I had Thomas just outside my top 10 for perspective and was a massive fan. - Mononoke

Danila Zhuravlyov, Jan Jenik, Spencer Statsney are a few of my low-key, way above consensus favorites and are in my top 30 and 40 (Stastney) respectively. I think Stastney is a mid-rounder probably on draft day, but he's the most unheralded player on that USA team. Ridiculous skater, high IQ, calm puck mover, maybe sneaky offensive upside. I think he got buried behind worse d-men (team always looked better with him getting good minutes) and could emerge on Notre Dame. Also, I think Zhuravlyov and Jenik have really intriguing upside. I think they shouldn't go later than the 2nd.....but who knows? I think Zhuravlyov is as good as names being bandied about as 1st round d-men. If the Flyers draft 2 forwards at 14/19, I want him badly at 50. I really see something there. Jenik is the youngest player in the draft, and a very high IQ puck controlling center with a good below the dots game. I think he's got a good floor but also untapped potential.
Lundkvist, Nordgren, Ylonen, Wise, Foudy, O'Brien, Morozov, Regula, Steeves are some other low-key interesting names in the 2nd-3rd+ perhaps, besides the usuals. - Mononoke
Agree on Stastney, whenever I saw them play I was wondering why he wasn’t more talked about. Looked like one of the better dmen on that team. |

I've seen that USA Dev Team team at least 15 times all season to the u18s. I have some strong reads. I think Wilde is a future bust in the making; his hype I flat out do not get. It frustrates me because he's incredibly gaffe prone and his hockey sense is a mess too, so it's not like he even fits the safe and reliable mold. I do like M. Samuelsson and K'Andre Miller. But after them -- Emberson is another low IQ kid and leached Stastney's minutes as a player with similar tools -- Stastney was the best d-man on the team, and yet was just a 3rd pair/PK guy all year -- right away I saw it, but his usage never changed all season, and I don't know what the coach saw. Until the u18s, when he was terrific and others were not, and he got more top 4 usage later on to help after a poor start.
I remember you liked David Farrance last year. Me not so much because I just thought he was a good skater but empty otherwise. Stastney is my Farrance. He really interests me as a 5'11 but stocky d-man with wheels. But he has a complete game too. I think some team will get a real good NHL potential d-man on the cheap. |

Its good value for sure and I wouldnt hesitate on a 2nd either but I want Hextall more focused on the quality of the NHL roster than mid round draft picks. The time has come. Its still important to draft well in those rounds but I want to see a shift in priorities going forward. - Baxter27
Based on last season, Weal isn't contributing to that quality.

I think the biggest problem is actually the acceptance of every day violence. Look at horror/torture movies and video games that have levels of violence that are just ridiculous. Music that is about nothing except thugs and gangs.

How the hell a parent doesn't realize that their kid is assembling a small arsenal is beyond my comprehension. I know you can't be on your kids 100% of the time, but I find it impossible to fathom that a parent would have no idea. |
