"Look, Dale...we're going to waive you. If you pass through waivers, just refuse to report, and we'll work out a mutual termination with you. Say...for $2 million a year for the next 2 years." - jmatchett383
That would actually be my underlining hope. |

Could trading Jordan Weal fetch us a late 2nd or early/mid 3rd for this draft? - arichardson22
Highly doubt it after his output last season |

I would not hesitate at any time if offered a 2nd or a 3rd round pick for Weal. - MJL
Its good value for sure and I wouldnt hesitate on a 2nd either but I want Hextall more focused on the quality of the NHL roster than mid round draft picks. The time has come. Its still important to draft well in those rounds but I want to see a shift in priorities going forward. |

I wouldn't imagine that he'd get a 2nd, but a 3rd is possible and I'd do it in a flash. |

I wouldn't. That would just mean more minutes for Lehtera and Weise. Two old guys who couldn't score in a brothel.
Weal actually produced at a good rate when he wasn't stuck on a line with Filppula. |

Most of Weal's production in 2016-17 came on a line with Filppula and Simmonds. |

I'd agree with that description of Sandin. His hands are like a forward's for a d-man, he's a natural puck mover, real heady, creative, pretty stocky for a sub 6 foot kid. He's competitive and can handle himself in his own end too. Just his overall skating -- speed, burst, edge work -- is kind of flat and average. It needs to improve. I think he could be a really good 2nd pair/PP guy for some team in the back half of the 1st as well. I would prefer a forward with the way the draft is breaking, but he'd be one of my first d-man choices at 19. Do wonder if you could trade down for him though. I think a lot of the d-men in that range could be traded down for. Jonny Tychonick is another one who impressed me a ton at the u18s, who I'd group with Sandin.
I said it the other day, but as much as I think Hayton is a conscientious center who cares about his off puck play (although he's no Bergeron, like I've heard ridiculously said), I'm not particularly impressed by his play with the puck. He has slick hands and a good shot, but he doesn't play on the puck that much, and when he does, I think he plays slow and doesn't really think ahead with it or as a passer. I think the talk about his hockey IQ is a bit overblown. I would not be enthused if he was the pick at 14 tbh. A kid like Robert Thomas went at 20 last year with similar stats and a similar profile, and I think people want Hayton to be Thomas this year -- who clearly had a huge D+1 year. But I don't think he's anywhere near as good or has the upside Thomas did last year. I had Thomas just outside my top 10 for perspective and was a massive fan. |

Filppula regressed at lot in 17-18, which was obviously the season I was referring to. You could say that there was clear decline in his ability to handle top-end matchups, at least when cast as a shutdown center or as a second line pivot.
If one were to take a more statistical approach, they could say that Filppula was was dead last in shot attempts relative to his teammates among the 129 NHL forwards to play 1,000 minutes at 5 on 5. And that he was also dead last in expected Goals For%. |

Only if we draft 7 of Mono’s boys with those picks - Nucker101
Danila Zhuravlyov, Jan Jenik, Spencer Statsney are a few of my low-key, way above consensus favorites and are in my top 30 and 40 (Stastney) respectively. I think Stastney is a mid-rounder probably on draft day, but he's the most unheralded player on that USA team. Ridiculous skater, high IQ, calm puck mover, maybe sneaky offensive upside. I think he got buried behind worse d-men (team always looked better with him getting good minutes) and could emerge on Notre Dame. Also, I think Zhuravlyov and Jenik have really intriguing upside. I think they shouldn't go later than the 2nd.....but who knows? I think Zhuravlyov is as good as names being bandied about as 1st round d-men. If the Flyers draft 2 forwards at 14/19, I want him badly at 50. I really see something there. Jenik is the youngest player in the draft, and a very high IQ puck controlling center with a good below the dots game. I think he's got a good floor but also untapped potential.
Lundkvist, Nordgren, Ylonen, Wise, Foudy, O'Brien, Morozov, Regula, Steeves are some other low-key interesting names in the 2nd-3rd+ perhaps, besides the usuals. |
