So a person I know who has been privy to a lot of info (and more importantly was right about all of it):

Leafs / Tavares could still happen, he wants to come, they want him, but its about term....Leafs brass realize D is a problem and are hestitant to bring him because of what he would want, plus keeping mathews/marner/nylander and in addtion to:

Doughty

Doughty being a leaf is NOT out of the realm of possibility. (apparently something personal with Doughty with some sort of ties)

Just what I heard...this guy was right about Clarkson 2 weeks before it happened and of Kessels departure just before it happened (and to which team). Freaked me out as I thought he was just lucky calling the Clarkson trade. He also said between Marner/Nylander, they'd keep Marner if it came down to it.

Again take it for what its worth....Should be an interesting summer either way. Wonder what the Kid (Dubbas) has planned.

I agree...just fooling around.

Need to get a #1 RH D....that's it.

After watching that interview, how long before Keefe is with the Leafs?

- Garnie

Leafs need to just go after Tavares and if that doesnt work plan B.

I think Babs is around for a while and maybe his whole 8 years. Question is, does Keefe stick around and maybe get bumped up to the leafs at some point and wait it out?

If I were a betting man, my money is on Doughty being a leaf over Tavares.

Especially if Uncle Lou ends up onthe Island.

Tavares will stay with the NYI
Doughty will stay with LA
EK with Ottawa

It's only 5 years, he may wait it out....$$$$ might keep him...maybe he becomes GM and coach of the Marlies too.

doughty clearly stated he wants to get paid, are the Leafs ready to pay 10.5-11.5M/yr for him long term?

Nope;

In 2019, he will be pushing 30.. I can't see the Leafs giving him a 7 year/$70M deal..

Pretty good comment on reddit, describing what an AHL GM does, and why Dubas was good at it:
On average, a team holds players rights for 3 years after drafting them. That means, at any given time you have roughly 3 rounds of picks to work with. 21 players, at least 2 of them (assuming you have 7 picks) will never reach AHL caliber.
15 drafted players, majority of the time they don't play in the AHL until age 20, and become waiver eligible at age 23. If you have a high pick, or take a NCAA player, chances are they never see the AHL. So knock that down to about 12 drafted players per year for your AHL team.
You might get some dept guys that clear waivers, let's say 1F, 1D, 1G. Back up to 15. You need to sign/acquire 8 guys to have a full roster, then about 5 buffer guys on 2 way deals for your ECHL team. This year the Marlies have 15 guys on AHL contracts, and 8 PTO/ATOs. Last year it was 17 AHL contracts, and 4 guys on loan from an NHL team.
So to start the season, you have development camp. Leafs invited 37 players this year, 41 last year. From there you have to decide who's worthy of Leafs camp, and who's worthy of Marlies camp. Then, you watch the rookie tournament and scout some more. Then, you watch Leafs training camp to see who's coming down. You conduct Marlies camp and pick through the guys who don't have an NHL contract. Then you go to the Solar Bears tryout to see what they have to offer.
The beginning of the season is turbulent with lots of recalls and assignments, and yoy have to ice a competitive roster, without going over the veteran max. At the trade deadline you make a bunch of paper transactions to make sure guys are Calder Cup Playoff eligible. You always look for ways to improve your roster, whether it's a European signing, CHL overager, NCAA player, or ECHL callup. Over the course of the season an AHL GM has to keep tabs on at least 100 players.
To explain why Dubas has done a great job: he's hired a fantastic Marlies staff including coaches, trainers, medical staff, analytics teams, and video coaches during his tenure. He's kept amazing AHL vets around to develop young guys, including Campbell, Clune, Brennan, Greening, LoVerde, Ben Smith, Mueller, Pl3, Justin Johnson, Gudbranson, Cal O'Reilly, Sislo....
He's played a hand in signing some decent prospects, like Trevor Moore, Kasimir Kaskisuo, Kristian Pospisil, Mason Marchment. He's also graduated Froese an Holl from the ECHL to the NHL.
Throughout his entire tenure the Marlies and Solar Bears have been competitive without relying too much on Vets, and he's graduated William Nylander, Zach Hyman, Kasperi Kapanen, Connor Brown, Andreas Johnsson, Josh Leivo, Frederik Gauthier, Nikita Soshnikov, Tobias Lindberg, Byron Froese, Travis Dermott, and Connor Carrick. Next year Borgman, Aaltonen, and Sparks will probably be joining them.
It helps to have endless amounts of money, but Dubas' player evaluation and knowledge of different areas of the game has already helped us immensely.
