The Sabres most certainly should be active in free agency, but the time to pounce is still a few years away so can they can make best use of the first 3or 4 years of whomever they sign, not be saddled with an over the hill player on the back half of the deal when they should be ready to contend.

The Leafs could sign Tavares but what is the point? Matthews is a legit #1 who will be paid soon. Tavares is also a #1 centre. Add 30 goal scorer Kadri. What is the point if their D is comprised of a few decent players then spare parts?
I see NJ, Columbus, St Louis or Calgary as good fits for Tavares. All teams have a fit and the necessary cap space.
