Didn’t have to trade them both
Just like we have Cap room even if we don’t trade ROR
And other guys can be moved (and are coming off the books after next season) to make even more room

- jdfitz77

We don’t have to trade O’Reilly.

We should though, especially now.

Because we undoubtedly will want to down the road anyways

Dude. Tyler. Myers. Will. Never. Be. A. Sabre. Again. He's. Gone.

So. Is. Evander. Kane.

Move. On.

O’Reilly & Risto...
current guys he hates on

We’ll see if Sam can stay in his good side

They have the cap room. They don't have the ammunition to make a material improvement to this roster other than O'Reilly unless you include Eichel or #1 overall. O'Reilly's perceived value far outweighs his actual. Hopefully, Botterilll takes advantage of it.

They were digressing. They made an improbable run as a 7-seed that saw the top 3 seeds in their conference lose in the first round. Good on them for taking advantage of it, but that team was never built for long term success. People forget how bad the East really was that year (including the Northeast Division Champion Buffalo Sabres).
- buffalofan19

Flyers were en fuego, didn’t matter how good the east was. LA won as an 8th seed so I guess their cup doesn’t count. Two games in cup final went to OT, but Flyers were over matched. I have a different recollection than you.

Don’t forget Bogosian.

It took everyone a few years to catch up to 365 and myself on him

And no team likely wins a Cup with ROR as it’s 1C
But he’s our 2C here, so.....

- jdfitz77

If O'Reilly is ever on a cup winning team, he will be a 3C, just as Jeff Carter was.

I just can’t hear how it’s impossible to improve by moving him. It’s nonsense

I have a recollection of Boucher standing on his head in both of those OT games, and Chicago carrying the play for the entire series.

To be fair, Carter was fantastic as their 2C in their second run.

He had 25 points in 26 playoff games that year

Because Philly actually trades him to the place he won a cup
- sbroads24

I only mentioned Carter’s Cups in LA
bc when Philly traded him,
the narrative was that they couldn’t win with him

Obviously that was proven false when Carter won twice in LA as one of their “core” players

And again...
Carter in Philly >>> Voracek + Coots
For SIX seasons

Finally this year the Voracek + Couturier combo is outshining what Carter did in Philly

So if we are keeping score...
it’s 1-6, Philly is losing the trade big time
They screwed up there

Now...
if u wanna compare O’Reilly to Richards,
since u think ROR is gonna drop off like Richards did

Well that actually would make some sense!

I’d just argue that i don’t think ROR will have that dramatic drop off
But we’d have to wait & see there

Our genius GM should come out with astronomical trade demands for him and end up trading him away for peanuts.

I am at the point where I think it's difficult to improve without moving him.

You most likely won't be able to improve through Free Agency. Just as we saw with Eichel, Dahlin won't get players to want to come here until they start winning games first. Who are you going to move to bring back someone that makes a material difference? It's either Ristolainen or O'Reilly, and I'm not really sure what kind of value Ristolainen has right now.

Another FAIR point...
the Carter comparison just didn’t make any sense at all

Again, trading ROR comes down to what value we can get for him,
and how we replace him

Bc if u wanna try & say that Sergachev was an “unknown” when he was traded for Drouin...
then u gotta consider a similar theory as far as Mittelstadt & how he will turn out

With Vegas doing so well & McNabb looking good... it’s just a kick in the nuts

GMTM killed our chance at having a good defense

Thank goodness we got lucky & got Dahlin

Here's the difference. Carter was Philly's best Center. LA had 2 centers that were better than he was, 3 if you could Richards at the time. Philly tried to build around Carter. LA build with him.
- buffalofan19

Carter was LA’s 2nd best Center
Who’d they have besides Kopitar?
Pretty sure Stoll was their 3C

I believe you.

I tend to get the members of Peter Laviollette's Goaltender Carousel mixed up from year to year. I know they had Ray Emery that year, too, didn't they?

My dude,

Philly didn’t trade Carter to LA.

Philly ended up with Coots and Voracek.

Columbus ended up with Johnson.

Philly won there Carter trade. Columbus lost theirs

That’s the thing though...
if we are trading O’Reilly for picks/prospects,
Then we might be waiting 6 years like Philly before we “win” that trade

So if we are moving ROR for someone(s) who actually help make us better in the next couple of years...
then ok! That makes sense

But if he’s being moved for pieces that are “maybes” or even “longshots” and we won’t find out for years...

Then he adds more value to us keeping him around and building with him

im not even joking, get rid of bogosian and bring in petry as your only moves and this team takes a massive step towards the playoffs.

That's how negative his impact has been since day 1.
