Since a bit of music convo happened I'll chime in with this niche thing that most people probably don't know exists.

Some of my favorite music that features a mix of precise world class technical skill and also great artistry is actually indoor percussion shows. It's basically what all the percussionists in the top drum and bugle corps do from November to April every year. The world class lines compete in a circuit called WGI and put on an 8ish minute show that is very theatrical and full of ridiculous musicianship. Imo it is a way cooler and more entertaining activity than watching marching bands and drum corps, but I'm also biased because I'm primarily a percussionist.

Anyway, here is an example of a really cool show from last year.

I listen to a really wide range of music, a bit of which falls into the "technically impressive but meh on artistry" category. I definitely favor music that has soul and makes me feel something, or songs that have a great feel/groove/catchiness over just technical ability.

I say technical ability and not talent, because imo knowing when to play less or not play at all to better serve the song is a direct part of talent and musicianship. Being able to shred reflects a large amount of time spent on technical ability, but that alone doesn't make you a talented musician. Knowing which skills to pull out of your vault and at what times is just as important.

You can probably guess from my username, but David Gilmour is my favorite guitarist. He is capable of playing fast, as he frequently plays fast bursts of notes for very short periods, but what makes him my favorite is his ability to let his solos breathe to really have the maximum impact. That, and his fantastic guitar tone.

Yup, I’ll take soul and passion over speed any day. Gilmour, Brian May, Mark Knopfler, Hendrix, Alex Lifeson, Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, George Harrison and Duane Allman are some of my faves.

Bands with guitarists that can shred are a dime a dozen. Bands featuring soulful guitarists and excellent songwriters are rare and should be treasured

Whatever Sam Morin did to the Hockey Gods in a past life, it must have been pretty eff'd up. Guy can't seem to buy a break.
- johndewar

It all started when Sanheim was chosen over Morin right out of camp, when Morin clearly had a much stronger camp.

I look at it like this. We all know what Steve Mason has become but it doesn't mean he would have become what he is now if he signed here last summer.

Can't go wrong with that list.

For me a fan of Mikael Akerfeld from Opeth, Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree and first few albums era of Danzig John Christ..

A few years ago I got to do the prop carrying to the floor for a high school drumline that did these type of shows the one year they did Pink Floyd "The Wall" and the second was Trans Siberian Orchestra "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo" they were pretty impressive for kids.

Marhcing band and indoor stuff is pretty big in NJ.

Yup, I’ve seen Al twice, both times at the Chestnut Caberet in Philly. Amazing show, every musician in his band was a virtuoso.

I'm not a huge fan and I think they're overrated, but what Page and Plant were able to create is arguably the biggest contribution to rock music ever.

Along those same lines I saw The Damned at the North Star about 10-12 years ago.
While not a fav band of mine there were a ton of people there with insane energy.
Still remember it to this day.

For me, it was the Bouncing Souls and H2O at the Troc on a Friday in 1999.

I was probably 15, and it was by far the best show I've ever been to. It was just the right time (in my opinion) to see both, and I was absolutely blown away by the crowd/band interaction. Nothing has ever topped that for me.

Yah..I could see that being a fun time for sure.

I was at both of the Type O Negative Halloween shows at the Troc with all the toilet paper ..that was fun as hell.

I've never seen Typo.

The best band set I've seen in 10 years was No Redeeming Social Value at This is Hardcore a few years back. They were throwing beach balls and pillow cases full of confetti into the crowd and everyone was just going nuts hitting each other with both. It was literally a party and no band could come close to it (including Judge). If that band regularly took the stage before 2AM, I'd love to see them again.

Get well Sam, we’ll see ya at camp.

Also, Lyon is seriously making a great case for himself to be one of the Flyers goalies next year. Kid has been a beast!

unless they can package him up as part of a deal, his value will never be higher

He's a bust, trade him!

It's still shocking that he went undrafted. Take away the stats, he's a huge right-handed dman who skates well. That has 6th round pick written all over it.
