Meh, 129th pick rarely yields an nhl player, let alone an art ross winner
thornton, wheeler, seguin, hamilton were much worse - BestRapperAlive

So why did Babcock let him play 25mins? He could have put the pairings in a blender and given more ice time to Rielly, Dermott and Polak.
Jake is what he is and needs to be deployed in a way that he can have success. - Schennski
Agreed. Gardiner and Zaitsev both get to many minutes. They both need to be in the range of 18-20 minutes per game and I think they would play a much better game.
Reilly should be getting more minutes than Gardiner but never does. Hopefully that changes next season. |

Need a top-pairing guy to make reilly better, and shift everyone else down. gardiner can stay as a pp specialist or he can be traded |

Defensively he is garbage.
Hope hes traded for a more defensively sound dman.
His points can be replaced by others. |

Crosby coughed up the puck that led to the winning goal.. good players are not immune to poop
Andersen let in a stinker also.
Again these are the players Lou decided to go with. Leafs dont have a better option to play than Gardiner atm

Going through old trades...this. this one stings. I know we may not have made the same pick, but my god.
Boston Bruins acquire Date Columbus Blue Jackets acquire
Adam McQuaid May 16, 2007 2007 5th round pick (#129-Jamie Benn) - RickJames77
I bet Columbus is more upset for trading the pick or Benn to Dallas. |

I agree with this post. Babcock overplayed Gardiner. I also agree that Gardiner was not the only problem. Does not change the perception that he choked badly in the most important game of the year. As did Reimer a few years back. I am fairly sure he will not be re-signed, I would think Leafs will be open to offers on him. Just my opinion. |

I agree, and the fact that he scored 52 points, he could bring a haul at the June draft if you can find a dance partner.

I think most player in general can be traded, but only if the deal makes sense. Is there a point in trading Gardiner for a late 1st and a prospect a few years away when they are close to winning now?
Trouba is really the only option right now, and I can’t see them wanting Gardiner. They could trade him for something and flip that + for Trouba.
Also, I still think leafs should go after Roland mckeown. Right shot, could be a good partner for Dermott.
Ty Dellandrea looks to be a good late pick if leafs keep their 1st. |

trade gardiner who will be due for a raise next year. sign de hann for current gradinerish money.
find a rh dman by trade or ufa.
mckweon is interesting. seems like wadell is itching to make some poorly throughout trades in carolina. |

De haan for Gardiner money? I would hope he comes cheaper than that.
Would be nice if we can take advantage of Waddell. If leafs make Dubas GM, he might find it hard trading with the older GMs in the league who will be wanting to take advantage of his inexperience. I do still hope Dubas is GM though. |

RFA trades
Trouba (doubt be is available at all though)
Colin Miller

Maybe Anaheim is dumb and needs a shakeup. Trade for Lindholm.
Matthews, Nylander and Marner are off the table in my world.

There was a run of Babcock interviews before the trade deadline where he was really pushing Gardiners smarts and how his level of thinking is hard to come by and blah blah lies.
I figured they were definitely pumping his tires for a trade. Similar to how much he stroked Dion when he first arrived. |

de hann is making 3.3 now. 4ish seems to be market for that type of defender on the open market.
carolina will probably be shopping rask, skinner and faulk ( ) and have d prospects to burn.
they need a goalie and forwards.
sparks/mcbackup might be interesting to them.
Z for rask if we are looking to get off of the Z contract. idk, just spitballing there. |

As i post this I see Mirtle did an article on something similar.
I didnt know this about Carlson
Argument against acquiring Carlson:
There’s a lot to chew on here. His coaches don’t trust him to face top competition (Matt Niskanen’s pairing does), his shot metrics have been mediocre throughout his career, and his point production this season was wildly unsustainable. History’s taught us that you typically don’t want to overpay for players coming off of a career year.
Also he had 32 Power play points this season which is about double what he usually gets. thats a pretty big red flag in regards to paying top money (along with the bit about not facing top comp)

Honestly, I am not sure why Tanev's name keeps showing up on people's wish list. IMO he's pure sh!t. 20 points scored was his best year in 6 NHL seasons. He's 28 and guess what - he's not going to get either better or faster at this stage. Please let's forget this giant pile exists - even though Hughson kisses his ring.
I would be ok with either Carlsson or Green at the right price, I fear, that the price will be too high in both $ and term.
I agree Leafs will not get Trouba, I would love Doug Hamilton - price would be steep
I think Hjalmarsson at thirty and on an expiring contract is not a good fit, Severson is not enough of an improvement over Marlie prospects
For trades, even though he is a LHD, Hanifin would be ok, and I would be happy with either Montour or Manson off the Ducks. Lindholm stays, but Ducks need offense badly, and Leafs have some to spare. Colin Miller if the price is ok would also be great |

Tanev comes up becuase he has very good defensive results
injuries are an issue and age and Vancouver is dumb and probably a bad trade partner
