Yeah the only thing adding Tavares prevents the Leafs from doing is adding a big contract player on defense.... which might end up being a problem if no young guys develop into solid top 4 players on defense.

It's a gamble in way, could payoff in the end.

I think you have to take that gamble. You can't expect a big contract D to actually make it to free agency. If they do, you could always trade Nylander and others then to make it work if the D arent developing.
