I'm reluctant to take any Vancouver trash because it probably contains used needles. |

OK - LETS DO SOME MATH!
Hyman($2.25)-Matthews($10)-Marner($6)
Marleau ($6.25) -Tavares ($9.5)-Nylander ($5.75)
Johnsson($1)-Kadri($4.5)-Kapanen($.863)
Leivo/Grundstrom($.75)-ufa/depth center($1)-Brown ($2.1) = ($49.963) forwards
Rielly($5)- insert rhd here (Trouba please?) ($7)
Dermott($.863)- Hjalmarsson ($4.1)
Hainsey ($3)- Sustr($3)
Borgman 7th D-man ($1) = ($23.963) D-Men
Andersen ($5)
McElhinny or Sparks. ($.85) = $5.85 Goalies
Total for players = $79.776
Add $1.2 for Phil Kessel retained = $80.976 million
This is assuming (1) the UFA and RFA accept these amounts and (2) Leafs are able to trade Matt Martin, Nikita Zaitsev and Gardiner without any retained salary.
Seems not too realistic or likely - wouldn't you agree. Cap is projected to be somewhere between $78 and $82 million. All the top Free agents will be expecting more than what I entered as well.
Don't @ me.

Your math is a bit off I think.
Trouba is a RFA this year, no way he gets 7M per season. Maybe 5.5M, or 6M
Marner is getting more then 6M(6.75M) but it starts next year not this year
Matthews will get at least 10M, but starting next year
Nylander is likely getting 6M-6.25M
Tavares, maybe 9.5, likely more however. Lets say 10M
So theoretically something with the above lineup could be made to work for next year(Hammer is only signed for next season as well)

Nobody with half a brain wants to trade Nylander for no reason. It's to get better on defense. If Calgary really is shopping Dougie Hamilton and the Leafs can get him for Nylander, they'd be stupid not to. A 24 year old, big, offensive, two-way RHD is exactly what the Leafs need. It's not like the Leafs would be trading Nylander for a 7th round pick. They'd be getting something equally awesome in return on the blue line. Does it suck that the Leafs should already have Dougie Hamilton? Absolutely. But that's the situation they are currently in.
If the Leafs can sign Evander Kane and trade Nylander for Hamilton, they're a better team both up front and on the back end. Much bigger, much stronger, much harder to play against and much more balanced. - Unholy_Goalie
I disagree, trading a young player like Nylander before you have a grasp on his true potential has disaster written all over it. I like Hamilton, but not at the cost of Nylander. |

Tavares will get more than 10M.
He's a UFA and some teams are desperate.
Habs will offer him 12M a year without thinking about it.
Don't worry though, he'll still sign elsewhere. |

Hamilton is already a great young defenseman. Nylander is very good but his showing in the playoffs didn't help his value, both for his new contract or for trading him.
I don't think Calgary makes that deal 1 for 1.
But that's obviously just my opinion. |

While I agree, I wonder if his priority is to win, and not pure greed. Stamkos took 8.5M to keep the team together, might Tavares do something similar and take like 9.5M or 10M, he may.
Everyone thought Stamkos was going to get 12M+ |

Also I believe the leafs have 3-3.5 mil in bonus money for the 18-19 season.
Its not going to work like that. I would forget trouba anyways.

Agreed. I wouldnt forget Trouba, but I do think its very unlikely. The only way it could happen is if he still wants out, they are better to trade him this offseason. |

Stamkos came from a team that had legitimate chances to win one, if not multiple, cups in the future. He took a discount to stay with the team that drafted him.
Tavares comes from one of the worstly managed organization in the last 20 years. With virtually no chance of winning a cup anytime soon, if not ever with the current management.
I do believe he'll take into account the possibility of winning, but I would never call a player greedy for accepting 2-3M more every year from a team who's not considered a contender today.
That's just called getting the most out of your career for you and your family. |

You can't tell me Tavares wouldn't think he could make the Leafs a contender by adding himself to the mix with a 105 point team. He has stated he wants to win, and most high end players understand that by taking too much cap hit they could impact their chance of winning.
I wouldnt be surprised if he signed for a bit less. You are right though, you can't fault him for taking the extra money if he does. If that's all he wants, he might as well stay in NY.

I don't believe that's all he wants. For one thing, he's most likely fed up with all the nonsense regarding team ownership and the arena.
But you're speaking as if his choice was the Islanders or Toronto.
There are other teams, let's say Vegas for exemple, who might be able to offer him both a winning environement and give him all the money he can get. |

I'm not getting my hopes up though. Despite me being convinced they'll throw all the money in the world at him. |
