The point is no one will trade for Letang...his cap hit, total inconsistent play, health, age..all non trade starters..plus he has a no trade clause. Hes not going anywhere...we got him on the blue line for the next 4 years pinching in at the wrong time, heading up the 2nd power play unit and missing the net on most of his shots from the point... - Corntoast
Shyt, most of his shots are ripped directly into the opponents shin pads
Ryan's argument is about his play with the puck. Of course you're gonna make more mistakes with it if you have the puck more.
My problem with Letang is his lack of awareness without the puck. The guy makes terrible reads and often forgets/ignores the basics of his position. - Thorny87
this is foolish... RW hasn't taught you anything about analytics or hockey. CF% is the standard measure of all positional players. End of conversation.
Obviously they're rare, but it's not every day you have a 21 year old RFA who is very capable of scoring 20 goals, shaky relationship with his team, and could maybe be had for $1.5-2 mil. I'm assuming he gets somewhere around 1 mil offer from pens. If someone extends $2 mil offer sheet, does GMJR match?
I realize this is unlikely, just posing the question. I agree with RW's thoughts here. If teams don't utilize philosophies such as this, why even have restricted free agency? Not advantageous to players at all.

I've been one of Letang's biggest supporters but that doesn't mean they shouldn't consider what they could get for him. Yes, he is still supremely talented but it's possible the Pens would be better served by having quality depth on D. The Pens are one of the few teams that doesn't really need the D to chip in, they just need them to not lose the game.
The Pens D was massively better last year with Cole & Daley rather than Letang and Ruewedel.
Trade Letang and Sheary to Edmonton for Larsson and Puljujarvi. Sign someone like Bieksa or Sustr for the bottom pairing RD. Save the extra cap space for Jake next year.

He's got 26 games in the NHL, no team is going to offer-sheet him.
It doesn't. You use both. Neither is useful without the other. - Feds91Stammer
I feel that people pick and choose which means more to them when it supports their argument.
Sid, Geno and Letang are very much live-by-the-sword/die-by-the-sword players; You accept their style lends itself to bad turnovers, but there's a limit. IMO his bad was too much this post-season. Look, the good things he does, even if he's playing at 60% is still better than 75% of the dmen in the NHL, but his bad this year was BAD.
What I, nor anyone else knows, is how deep Letang's injury and long period of time off really affected him. His type of injury is a very rough one to bounce back from and not playing for a long time makes it even harder, but for how long?
He just did not look like Letang this year at any point, even how improved he was from the start of the season. My hope is that a healthy off-season of rest and training will show a different Letang next year.

Teams won't but He's the kind of player that teams really SHOULD offer sheet
From JR's perspective, he hasn't really proven anything and he the Penguins only have a 2nd round pick invested in him. He's the guy JR needs to get on one of those Rust/Sheary/Kuhn style deals they signed during their 1st pro season. 2 years 2 million ish, etc
For another team that is flush with capspace, low on talent, they'd be smart to throw 2 million or 2.5 at a guy like Sprong since he'd only cost them a 2nd rounder to acquire at that caphit and he's basically NHL ready (1.9 and below is only a 3rd rounder, up to 3.9 million still only costs you a 2nd)
Won't happen, but if I was a GM, I'd be taking a flamethrower to bridges and build my team this way. I'd make a point of locking up my key RFA's and if another team didn't do the same, Bye Felicia
