I would keep the pics and stockpile young hungry talent... LV, Nashville, Winnipeg have plenty of skill good players, not superstars (excl. Laine).. - jacksonNYR
I would too, personally. Especially because the Rags aren't contending next year. Few years down the line, I think you get more impact from the 3 picks than from one guy. Of course, Svech could be Ovi light. And who wouldn't want that.
I'm not completely sold on shedding all of those picks for one pick. - JRR1285
I am not either. I would much prefer to pay a much smaller price to move up a couple spots (maybe for a second round pick) if they really want to insure they get the second tier player they want. I am just not convinced that either Zadina or Svenchnikov are worth the price.
Another thing that we don't talk about often is using those two late first rounders to move a second Rangers first round pick up the ladder. Maybe you could leave the draft with something like Wahlstrom and Wilde or Dobson/Hughes and Veleno/Hayton, which I like better than the idea of just drafting one player.
Not saying either tactic is wrong, but I just prefer leaving this draft with more assets.

say they do stay at 9th.
say Tampa wins the Cup
they then have 26th, 31st, 39th, 48th, 70th and 88th
I would guarantee they would use some combo of those picks to get higher up in the first round

That's cool with me. At least he won't be wearing the bright yellow Gorton fisherman jersey your franchise is inevitably going to come out with. - JRR1285
You both had a little Redden. Start bonding, damnit.

It's rainwear and it serves a purpose. All the Ranger-fan women flood the ice when Barzal has the puck.

I doubt it will be that low but I would want him back at that price. I see him netting around 5M per. Which is a little too rich for me at this stage. - JRR1285
Holy hell, no way. Someone pays that man 5M, hopefully it's Marky Marc Berg

I think there is no doubt that they will move up the draft at some point, either with their first pick or the two later ones. Hell, you can even move those two later picks up with the addition of second and third rounders.
Not sure Canes move the pick, but it is being reported in multiple places that the Habs are shopping the 3, would'nt that get the Rangers the third of the trio everyone is so high on, also would be interesting if a bidding war developed between Isles and Rangers for the spot.

Here is what Rick Nash is, IMO.
He's a guy that is going to score somewhere between 20-25 goals. He works his ass of every shift, back checks, kills penalties, does all of the little things right. He's a true pro and would probably be a great influence in some team's room. He just can't really score much anymore.

What is that type of player worth? - Pete V
I don't agree with the goal count, but I absolutely recognize everything else you said. What's that worth? I imagine Brian Gionta, when the Sabres signed him 4 years ago. 4 M for a multi year deal?

The goal count is an interesting one. He's the type of player that will go dry for 20 games, and then score something like 8 goals in 10 games. I think he will definitely clear 20, but it might not necessarily feel like 20, because he has a tendency to go on mini-goal scoring binges, between long dry spots.

Nash will get a somewhat-lucrative deal because of who he is and some GM hoping that he can (to steal part of a line from Moneyball) milk the last ounce of hockey out of him. It will most likely backfire and the severity of it will be determined by how much he signs for.
I'd love Rick Nash on the Islanders, but I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole for $5M/per, unless it was a one year deal.

Over on the other board, we call this "Brock Nelson Syndrome". Except Nelson is a bit more predictable. Come flying out of the gate to start the year, score 16 goals in a few months, and then go on vacation from approximately December until the season ends.
New owner Thomas Dundon first demoted and then let go Ron Francis, the team’s former GM and President of Hockey Operations. Following him out the door, apparently of his own volition, was Rod Brind’Amour, who left due to his friendship with Francis.
May wanna hold off on this whole scenario. Not sure Brind'Amour takes the head coaching position if they plan to trade the #2.

Rod Brind'Amour, 47, will be the next head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. This checks a few interesting boxes for owner Tom Dundon.

See Eric Staal.
Nash might thrive somewhere, there's a good chance he never will. But someone with the space is going to take that chance. I would not be surprised to see him go beast mode in the playoffs one season and be a difference maker. I don't want to try him again here unless he comes back in for dirt cheap.
