the best defence in Canucks history is arguably the 2011 bunch and out of the top D , 2 were drafted in the 2nd round or later (edler, bieksa) , 3 were trades(salo, erhoff, ballard) , 3 more were free agent signings(tanev, rome, alberts) plus some less used guys that drafted and aquired as fill ins in minor trades, so my point is a defense can be built other ways then just picking at the top of the draft

- onesmallleap

A case could be made for both ways , I don't know if there are any wrong answers. That is why I want to trade Tanev to get another pick or top forward

We seen teams like the Leafs and Islanders deal with only forwards , you don't go very far.

I would be fine sucking for 7-10 years if we could stockpile the amount of potential top 4 (even top 2) D like Nashville and then trade the surplus to teams desperate for D like Nashville did with Jones for Johanssen.

We dont need just one guy. You cant sit here and say oh we dont need to draft defense in the first few rounds because 10 years ago we got lucky and found some defense in later rounds. Thats like Detroit saying we got zetterberg and datsyuk in rounds 5-7 rounds so need to draft forwards until then.

thats just dumb.

We need to use every pick in the first 3 rounds at least on defense that includes any trade for any player from now until the draft.

We have nothing on defense in the future. Like absolute zero.

Its not like were passing on McDavid..

BS Green was just in Utica and said he was very impressed with Chatfield and Brisebois , 2 guys that will probably fill roles in a couple years maybe sooner , Tryamkin if he comes back , Hutton if he gets his stuff together , we have some young guys coming , like Sautner,Mceneny and others we have drafted and are in the process of developing

your opinion not mine , but time will tell i guess , Vegas' entire defense is built on bottom pairing and cast offs and they look pretty good

Its not just mine:

Vegas has better defense than us. Just because the players were cast offs doesnt mean they arent better than what we have.

Most here like "dynamic" players, not necessarily the players that will best fit into a structure.

Some of the "castoffs" also never got the chance on their old teams that they did in Vegas and flourished. Nobody thought Karlsson would get 40+ goals.

Best hope is we draft a true #2D this draft & go from there. Who is that after Dahlin is gone?

i agree we can use some upgrade to our defensive prospects , but not at level of turning down big Centre's or offensive wingers. We need help everywhere so grab the best players for our team going forward

I agree if the C or F is better & elite potential.

Suppose we pick a F is any of Wahlstrom Tkachuk Kotkaniemi possibly elite?
Which D are better at 7th? Are any top 2?

I have now watched several hours of tape on 2 defenseman in the draft, from USDP.
Bode Wilde appears too be a much better defenseman than Hughes.
He plays all aspects of the game, whereas Hughes looks too be a total disaster in the defensive, very Hutton-like.

Dobson and Bouchard both have top pairing potential. So does Boqvist. I think Hughes has the potential skill set to be a #1, but his size may keep him as either a #3 or #2.
I would take Dobson over Wahlstrom or that other guy, but I think Tkachuk over them.

I'm not sure if I want a forward if the top 3 are gone. In fact, if they were considering Wahlstrom @7, I would hypothetically warm up to the idea of trading down a few spots and grabbing Veleno and aiming for two D in the 2nd round... but there is going to be top 2d potential at 7 still. That pretty much cements my focus on D.
