I am trying to understand why they would do this? How does it help them in any way? |

Just the principals, Pacioretty could also be involved, lots of 2nd rounders for the Habs could also be had, Calgary doesn't hit the podium until the 4th round so, they would most likely be interested in gathering some picks. The 3rd overall pick would also allow them to select the other Tkachuk |

Calgary will be spectators this entire draft... The 3rd overall and 2 seconds would help |

Calgary is not looking for picks. They finished building their d-core, and are building around young Gaudreau and Monahan, their 23 yo franchise center signed for another 5 years. Why would they try to get the 3rd overall pick for a guy that has 30% of chances to reach Monahan's potential?
If they trade Monahan, their #1 center is 45-points Mikael Backlund. If they acquire Pacioretty, a LW, he joins a LW depth chart that already has Gaudreau, Tkatchuk and Bennett.

I hear ya and at no point did I say it was a slam dunk, it was a suggestion and your detailed explanation here is great, much better than "Calgary says no"
The flip side is, they do have Sam Bennett at C and Brady Tkachuk can also play C! My point was mainly that no team likes to skip pretty much an entire draft year, whether they have a built D core or not.
With all that said, I do agree that the Flames would most likely take a pass...
