I agree with you for the most part, but it is a team game and there is a lot of people to look at as reasons why we didn't advance
Zaitsev - hasn't played well for most of the season, didn't play great in the playoffs
Gardiner - one really bad period and he is now the scapegoat
Kadri - stupid suspension
JVR - almost invisible
Matthews - injured? Wanted to see more out of him
Nylander - didn't step up enough
Freddie - some amazing play and stops during the series, pretty much stole all 3 games we won. Let in some softies when it mattered most
Babcock - didn't challenge the offside in game 1, could have affected the series from the outset
Props to Marner, Hyman, Kapanen, Johnsson, Reilly, Plekanec, and Marleau for their play most of the series
Bozak, Brown, Polak, Dermott were all okay, not great but not terrible - Kinger34
I agree!
Although, I challenge the 'Gardiner- one bad period thinking'. I do think that overall this was Gardiner's best season and his mistakes were minimized, however, once again the story is what? Gardiner chokes like a deer in the headlights...

I actually thought Polak was great. Delivered some bone crunching hits and did his job well... for what we are paying him he was awesome

Worth a shot. Wouldn’t trade Provy unless Mcdavid is the return and that’s never gonna happen so........ |

D needs a rebuild - mr.sir
Too bad Anderson had a rough game. A few of those goals really should have been saved. It's a shame b/c he was main reason why Leafs made it to game 7. A couple of timely saves in 3rd pd. and game would have been much different.

I can't believe some people are calling for Matthews head ALREADY??? Trade Matthews, you've waited since Sundin in his prime for a #1 center, you're gifted one via the draft lotto and two years later you wanna get rid of him....WTF man.
He's 20 year's old, he's a great young player, one of the top 10 centers overall in the league. You guys are unbelieveable, really!!!
The Leafs major players are all so young and there's a lot of time to win with them, have some patience and let the team come together once they address the defense. |

No one questions his offensive talent. But, once again, what is the story? Gardiner with an epic fail in the most important game. Not saying its all his fault, Andersen let in that soft goal to get the bruins back in. But come on... Gardiner is not some irreplaceable defensive gem. He gets 50 points? How many were on the PP feeding Marner, Willie and Matthews this year? Polak could get 40 points doing the same thing all year!
I would like to see him gone and replaced with someone more steady.
Just my opinion... - Hockey_Reverend
Agreed.
time to move on from him. |

People are being foolish.
But this could turn out to be a good thing and hopefully change the mindset of management.
Hoping for big changes in the summer.
I don't the leafs to be the next Washington capitals. |

no question there. I'm glad it didn't come down to some BS penalty call or puck luck to break a tie. Boston, hands down, outplayed Toronto in game 7 and deserved the win.
Better things to come for the Leafs |

Man... the Leafs are so close, but so far away...
I have to assume Matthews is injured. He is better than he played as he was mostly invisible. He was skating like a 40 year old, not a 20 year old.
Anderson was bad, but you can't really blame things on him. He was the only reason they made it to game 7... looked like he was just gassed.
Toronto was just soooo soft in that game. I think Polak, Hyman, Marleau and Kadri were the only guys who didn't straight up run away from contact. How many times did Nylander have a chance to beat a player to the puck and instead of risk getting hit, he let the defenceman take the puck uncontested and clear the zone.
The Leafs need a true top D man badly. I'd be offering up Nylander and Gardiner for Karlsson or Doughty on a sign and trade. Way too many cutesy players on the team. |

Gardiner and Rielly last year vs. WAS was as close to a perfect series as you could've asked from those two, especially when Polak went down.
Gardiner's a high risk/high reward defenseman: you take the good with the bad with him. Those half a dozen stretch passes he made last night usually connect 80% of the time; last night, they turned into 2 goals against.
Still lots of nerves on the backend too: lots of missed opportunities to get it out, but we knew our D was weak, especially on the PK with Hainsey and Polak back there.
It's going to be a interesting off-season though.
Are we going top-heavy with a run at Tavares or are we looking for D?
Carlson would look pretty good on the right side.. |
