If Gretzky got traded, anybody can be.
If the deal is right, nothing is ever off the table.
The top priority is always making the team better and sometimes fans put their "favorites" ahead of what the team needs to actually improve.
All that being said, there's little to no reason to trade Matthews at this moment in time. But things can always change. - Unholy_Goalie
There's no reason to trade him because he's stll young and they don't have to commit to him for another 5 years, and considering how long we female doged about not having a no. 1 centre he'll have to do until something better comes..
...still
he was perimeter all round. the playoffs are a whole different animal |

I deleted the rest of your post because it had no bearing on this conversation. Sure anyone can be traded, but deciding we need to trade Matthews because of this series is stupid.
Reactionary idiots are suggesting trading our 20 year old, 1st line center because he had a tough series against a good playoff team that focused their whole defensive strategy around shutting him down.
*This is the same guy we drafted 1st overall two years ago.
*The guy that has the record for 4 goals in his first NHL game.
*The Calder winner last year.
*The guy that had 40 goals his first season and broke the Leafs points and goals record for a rookie while playing good defensive hockey with two other rookies.
*The guy that had a ppg season in his second year despite battling injuries.
He is only getting better. Lots of players have trouble in the playoffs on occasion. Last year against Washington he had 4 goals and 5 points in 6 games, yet these idiots with the memories of goldfish are labeling him a choke artist in the playoffs. He had a bad time this year. It happens.
This is (frank)ing retarded and people need to stop. |

It's a different point of view. No reason it needs to stop. If Arizona was stupid enough to give up that kind of a package and the Leafs were lucky enough to sign Tavares, the Leafs would be a better team because of it. Is it likely? Not even remotely close. But it's an idea. |

Dude, stop playing dumb.
We both know the trade proposals on this thread aren't coming from calm and rational people that are thoughtfully trying to improve this team. They aren't looking at this organization and calmly trying to trade from a position of strength to improve an area of weakness.
These proposals are from emotional fans that have just watched their team lose a game 7 that are suggesting trading away our best player because they're upset.
I stand by my comment. This is (frank)ing retarded and needs to stop. It's embarrassing to our fanbase.
Or do you also want to trade Matthews now?
I find it rather hilarious that you just made about a dozen posts earlier in order to defend Gardiner from over reacting fans, yet now you are arguing with me in order to defend over reacting fans that are female doging about Matthews.
I also worry it is the reactionary sentiment of a large amount of the Leafs fanbase and hope we don't see a bunch media bullpoop directed at Matthews because of this. The last thing we need is Simmons writing about Matthews' love of hamburgers or some poop. |

tomorrow (today for me) when we learn that Matthews played with a torn rotator cuff, people will (probably?) stop with the trade talk.
I wonder whether Lou could actually make some magic work for the Leafs this off-season:
Let's say Tavares decides to leave the NYI and sign with Toronto.
Maybe Leafs can work out a trade with NYI along the lines of:
Anders Lee
for
Gardiner + 1st round pick 2018 + a prospect / 2nd round pick (+)
for NYI it could even make sense to trade Barzal for Nylander +++ , although that is more unlikely.
Anders Lee brings exactly what the Leafs need to replace JVR - goals and big presence on the PP, plus some 2way play, physicality (or truculence if you wan to ).
Hyman - Matthews - Nylander
Lee - Tavares - Marner
Marleau - Kadri - Brown
Johnsson - Bozak - Kapanen
Komarov(/Grundstrom) 13th FW
seems like a very deep forward group (not sure if Bozak is fit for 4th line C duties, but still).
on D
Rielly - Hainsey
Dermott - Hamhuis
Borgman - Zaitsev
Polak (/Liljegren end of season)
Freddy
McElhinney / Pickard

Please tell me the Leafs fans suggesting trade proposals for Matthews because of one 7 game playoff series are trolling their own fans.... Please tell me you guys aren't actually this stupid. - Thecakeisalie
No poop.
For years we didn't have that number 1 Centre we coveted. Now we have him, and people want him gone because of his performance in 1 playoff series where he was most likely injured and playing against the best defensive forward in the league.
Do you guy forget the 4 goals vs Washington in round 1 last year?
Listen, I am hurting this morning too. 15 years since a playoff round victory sucks balls. And again it's not that we lost it's how we lost that hurts the most.
But to suggest trading away our franchise player now? (frank)ing unbelievable. |

Gardiner needs to be the 3 or 4....like Krug on the Bruins.
Right now he is the 2, sometimes even the 1 of Reilly is off his game. He's not at that level.
I don't get the hate on him, he's a 4 million dollar defensmen playing in a 7 million dollar D role....he needs help. - Santo_44
Reminds me of the 7 mill D playing 1D who shoulda been a 3D making 4 mill that we once had, but got rid of.
Bye Jake.

Having had the unfortunate experience of watching the leafs all season and playoffs (stuck in Waterloo), he would be, hands down; T.O's best defense-man. - Whiskey-Tango

Not playing Dermott is mind blowing .
I guess all we have to look forward to now is seeing how they fix the blueline. |
|

Did we trade Gardiner yet???
What a Douche Bag. I have said it before and I will say it again. When the chips are down and the game is winner take all, Gardiner reverts to a Deer in the headlights...
Pleaase Lou, take care of this and move him before next season for a real d-man... |

Cut the guy some slack.
He was arguably our best d man in the playoffs in 2013 and last year. He is what he is, a high risk - high reward d man.
His play didn't cost us game 1, 2, or 4. The defence as a whole needs to be upgraded and we need some better defensive defencemen to help insulate Gardiner and his style of play.
Keep Gardiner, Reilly, Dermott, and Zaitsev, Work a trade for a top pairing stud d man and sign/trade for to fill the gaps. |

I'm disappointed in the way that series ended, but we know this team still needs work. One player pretty much gift wrapped that game for the Bruins. |

I'm happy we made it to game 7. But it is disappointing when you are leading 4-3 and give up 4 goals in the 3rd of a do or die game. 2 soft goals and lots of piss poor clearing attempts and turn overs...
On the positive side there were several players I was very happy with:
Kap
Johnson
Marner
POLAK (he was a beast out there!)
Dermont
Reilly
Hyman
Marleau

I don't think gardiner is gone. Makes no sense. Some want to buy him out or trade him for a used puck bag. That's lunacy. He was good much of this year, put up 50pts this year he wasn't an issue in the rest of the series. One bad game doesn't mean he needs to be dumped for trash. You're not goi g to get better by getting rid of your best dmen.
Still unfathomable how little Dermott played. |

I agree with you for the most part, but it is a team game and there is a lot of people to look at as reasons why we didn't advance
Zaitsev - hasn't played well for most of the season, didn't play great in the playoffs
Gardiner - one really bad period and he is now the scapegoat
Kadri - stupid suspension
JVR - almost invisible
Matthews - injured? Wanted to see more out of him
Nylander - didn't step up enough
Freddie - some amazing play and stops during the series, pretty much stole all 3 games we won. Let in some softies when it mattered most
Babcock - didn't challenge the offside in game 1, could have affected the series from the outset
Props to Marner, Hyman, Kapanen, Johnsson, Reilly, Plekanec, and Marleau for their play most of the series
Bozak, Brown, Polak, Dermott were all okay, not great but not terrible |

No one questions his offensive talent. But, once again, what is the story? Gardiner with an epic fail in the most important game. Not saying its all his fault, Andersen let in that soft goal to get the bruins back in. But come on... Gardiner is not some irreplaceable defensive gem. He gets 50 points? How many were on the PP feeding Marner, Willie and Matthews this year? Polak could get 40 points doing the same thing all year!
I would like to see him gone and replaced with someone more steady.
Just my opinion... |
