I am 100% for giving spots to young players but you can't expect them to replace veterans right away in terms of results and that means pain, more pain. - Unholy_Goalie
It depends. I don't expect Kapanen to score 36 but no one thought JVR would score that this year either.
If he scores 20 I'd be happy. |

Toronto is the best option for him.
I see it as NYI or TOR.
Of course, unless he wants money. Then it's up in the air. - Santo_44
I'd like to think so as well.
But maybe he wants to be the 'true' #1C.
Price the goalie. Weber the D. Tavares the C.
Mtl will get rid of "patches" and with Drouin, Galchenyuk, Gallagher, Mete and a few other good younger guys in there, that's not a bad team - and maybe at least as good a chance for Tavares to win a Stanley Cup as when joining Leafs.
Leafs miss the #1D.
Leafs miss the elite goalie.
Leafs already have the #1C.
From Tavares perspective.. not sure what's more attractive.
(unless he absolutely hates the Habs, but I think most Canadian professional hockey players can recognise that best 2 franchises are Leafs and Habs). |

30 for JVR was a given. 36 was a slightly pleasant surprise.
I can see Kapanen, Johnsson and Brown scoring 50-55 combined. It should be enough to replace the goals. |

Tavares would no doubt make the Leafs better but they had him.and Barzal up the middle this year and missed the playoffs. Gotta be well rounded.

Out in the 1st round. That's winning?
Nashville is a way better fit. More money, better team, quiet life.
It really isn't unless they blow the doors off with an offer nobody can match like 14 million a year or something crazy. - Unholy_Goalie
Cap space
NSH-7 million
TOR-25 million
More money? WRONG
And uhmmm.......don't be hypocritical, if I'm not allowed to say playing for his hometown is a factor you can not say playing in a "quiet" environment is a factor. We don't know what type of environment he wants to play in.
You don't know him personally, I don't know him personally. Your point is invalid there.
And yes, when you look at the Leafs team and you add Tavares? They are most certainly a top team during his tenure. |

Double edge sword. He was the reason they got to game 7 and a big part of why they lost game 7.
You can make all the diving stick saves you want, the softies can't go in when it matters.
But I think the problem is just fatigue. Nobody faced more shots than he did this season. The Leafs need to give up fewer shots and they need a back-up who can play 25-30 games. - Unholy_Goalie
Agree with the fatigue part. With better D, we can play our backup more next year and rest Freddy for more games. Our backup did play very well later this past season. All a part of our rebuild. Stay positive gang. Look how far we came in a very short time. And we have the best management group in the league to push us to the next stage. |

Jvr and 30 wasn't given. 20 to 25 is given but we are arguing semantics there.
We can end our good discussion here since usually they turn into arguments haha |

if Leafs really want to be a 'defense first' team, then they need to completely change the whole team structure.
only keep Rielly and Dermott on defense.
(maybe Hainsey/Polak for bottom pair)
get rid of JVR, Nylander, Gardiner, Zaitsev, Andersen.'
that's not going to happen.

Cap is going up to 78-82, so let's say 80. That's 12 million. And they can clear salary very easily. Not to mention he walks home with more money in Nashville than he does in Toronto because of the better tax rate. So thank you but have a seat.
9 times out of 10, the players go with the better team (Nashville), more money (Nashville gives more than the Leafs unless the Leafs seriously overpay) and the quieter environment. |
