I dont think anyone would trade away the chance pre lottery, but their pick has a ton more value now than it will sunday if it stays the same and doesnt move up. Feast or famine pre lottery.

Montreal's prelottery pick = ROR ++
But their post lottery pick of being slotted 4-7 = ROR

It's Montreal's call, but I don't see them moving the pick before the lottery.

More or less. But you can't just sit there and lowball any RFA. They can just not sign. Or you can drag negotiations out and damage your standing with the player. There's a lot of factors that need to be looked into, and comparables will set a benchmark, more or less.

Sam Reinhart comparables, graded as a winger (on paper only)

-Sam Reinhart, signed at 22 for ???, 0.58 ppg

-Brandon Saad, signed at 22 for 6 million, 0.61 ppg (2015)
-Jonathan Huberdeau, signed at 22 for 4.33 million, 0.58 ppg (2015)
-Andre Burakovsky, signed at 22 for 3 million, 0.48 ppg (2017)
-Jamie Benn, signed at 23 for 5.25 million, 0.72 ppg (2013)
-Nikita Kucherov, signed at 23 for 4.76 million, 0.71 ppg (2016)

My guess is that he gets something close to a Huberdeau contract. 4.5 for 3-6 years.

Why would Sam sign long term for less than Drouin? (5.5m)

Most of those deals are too old. The market was pushed up considerably by Draistaitl. I'm not saying Sam deserves that kind of deal, but it trickles down to similar players.

That's way too much. RoR has a lot of value, he's a 2C on most teams in the league. His value alone should get us a top ten pick, maybe not #4, though. But what we would have to add is minimal, a long shot prospect or even just eating some of ROR's contract.

would you trade a top 10 pick for a 2nd line centre?

not sure Nylander and McCabe, or their comparables from montreal, are better than anyone the sabres have on their current roster...Nylander has proven nothing so far and McCabe looks to be a solid #4 at best
- Michael Pachla

The player that is drafted between 4-6 are projected to be than any d-man or winger we currently have.

I would say because Drats is an outlier based on his one year. At this juncture, he's more offensively talented than Reinhart. Drouin and Drats are also centers mostly, so the comparison isn't exactly equal.

A lot of variables there. Derrick Brassard and Evgeny Malkin are both 2nd line centers.

Depending on the player and the team's ability, as well as the strength of the draft, I would consider it.

Reinhart shouldn't get Jonathan Drouin money, but Jonathan Drouin shouldn't get Drouin money, either. I think his deal should be a cautionary tale (at this point), not a benchmark

they're presently selecting fourth overall...if the sabres could pull that off, i'd say go for it...problem is, I don't think the habs would go for that
- Michael Pachla

Think everyone remembers the rumor of Cam Fowler for #8 overall. RoR and Cam have very similar value in my book.

I think you're right, the Habs wouldn't do it. If anyone is willing to include a top 10 pick, I'd jump at it.

As a fan of the Sabres, or any team in need of talent, no, I don't.

I'm not saying he should get it, I'm saying he shouldn't even consider signing long term for less. I still think this ends in a 2 year bridge.

Except nobody (not even tim) bit at that. Both of their values probably fall just shy of top 10 pick.

You'd be looking to target teams in that 10-15 range that don't have a shot at elite talent but need to make some changes.

If I was Montreal with no centers and Price's contract tying up my cap for years to come. Than, yes, so long as my pick is between 4-7, I would consider moving it for RoR or another quality play-now center.

Supply and demand. If Montreal wants a 26 year old top 2 Centre who can play big minutes it’s what that’s gonna cost when trading with a divisional rival. We don’t have to trade ROR. Not counting Tavares, who in free agency would you take over O’Reilly ? Can’t imagine many teams are looking at trading their 2nd line C’s either.

So the logical play is to add 7.5 million more?

except he can't otherwise we wouldn't be 31st and trying to move him.

Forget free agency, I can name 10 players in this draft i would take over ROR at his salary.

What is any team hoping for in the center position at pick 4-7? You're not going to find Matthews, Eichel, or McDavid. You're shooting for an ROR, a guy who can get you 60pts per year, is strong defensively, and wins face offs. Montreal can either make their pick and hope for a winner who will be good in 2-3 years, or they can have the established guy in his prime now.

Yes, ROR will add the their cap, but if they're not considering a full blown rebuild, than this is probably a solid option for them.
