Here's a proposal I threw out:
Assuming St. Louis doesn't win the lottery, trade Simmonds, Voracek, and 2 2018 1sts for 1st overall, draft Dahlin.
Sign Tavares
Trade Sanheim (who would now be redundant, in a good way) for a young top-6 winger (Tuch, Fischer) to replace Voracek/Simmonds.
Thoughts? - jmatchett383

RE Tavares
I just feel like it has been TO's plan to get Tavares as that "final piece" for a few years now.
Tavares grew up just outside of Toronto. Grew up a Leafs fan.
All the stars are aligned for this and if that is where he wants to play, that is where he is going to play.
The Leafs have almost 23 million coming off the cap this off season. They can break the bank and still have money left over. - MBFlyerfan
they also will have to pay Matthews and Marner after next season and Nylander after this season. they have to replace or sign JVR, Bozak and Komarov. obviously JT would be one of the replacements. Who knows, maybe JT gives them a discount. |

Here's my take on Simmonds:
I love him. He's been one of my favorite Flyers players for the past few years. My preference is to see the Flyers extend him to a 2-3 year deal. But if management has absolutely no intention of resigning him, then they should trade him on Draft Day. Also, if they can't get a deal done by training camp, they should trade him.
My concern is that if he plays the season without a contractual security, then that could spell trouble for the team. - jkgrossman

If there was a team in the league that could get him for the discount, my guess is it would be the Leafs. |

So would you look at the Byfuglien deal which was signed in 2016-2017? 5 years 7.6 million?
I would assume the Flyers would want max years so 8 years. Subban's at 9 million but he also was coming off a cheap bridge deal. - J35Bacher
Buff is a bad comparison, he was 31 when he signed that deal. Provorov will be 22 when his new deal starts. No matter what, extending him this summer is the smart move. If he goes into next year without an extension, it could really get expensive for the Flyers. Let's say, for sake of argument, Ghost misses some time with an injury and Provorov gets some top pp unit time. Lets also say that once again the kid is iron man, plays all 82 games and scores 18 goals and 55 points. He's a +25, is playing 26+ minutes a game and ends up a finalist for the Norris trophy and a 2nd team all star.
You would now be looking at a deal that is going to look something like 8 years and 85 million dollars, aav 10.625 million dollars. If you extend him this summer, I'm guessing it's something like 8 years and 65 million, aav of 8.125 million. Bite the bullet and do it now, the kid is worth it. Hell by the last couple years of the contract, he's in his late 20s which is still prime years for a Dman, and the cap could be approaching 100 million. If so, Provy at 8.125 is a steal!

I'd rather target Montreals pick if they are at 4 and get one of Zadina, Svechnikov or Tkatchuk. Probably would be Tkatchuk at 4. - J35Bacher
Difficult, but much more realistic. No one is trading Dahlin.

Odds are, a team that has that pick will want something like the following to move it to us:
Both 2018 firsts
Sanheim
Frost
Hart
Scouts are calling this kid the next Nick Lidstrom. He isn't getting moved unless it's for a Lindros like haul. - BiggE
The proposed deal for "exceptional player status" Aaron Ekblad was Simmonds (3 years younger, granted), a mid-round 1st, and a 1st the following year. Is Dahlin really being touted that much more than Ekblad was? |

He's the best D prospect in like 30 years at the time of the draft. |

No, they'll pull the whole bitter ex-boyfriend rubbish:
"Yeah, he's good, but that contract is going to be horrible for the last 4 years."
"If you want a guy who isn't loyal to his team, have fun with him."
"He's not a winner, you'll never win anything with him on your team." |

Sean Day, yes. And he has had to deal with some family and health issues after he was given the status, but he was apparently disgustingly good at lower levels.
But I think that the only others are McDavid, and Tavares. They've turned out okay. |

David G: Would you rather have the top pick in this year's draft or in 2019?
I lean to Dahlin over Jack Hughes now, but it’s tight.
Is Jack Hughes really projected to be that good?? |

Is he can't-miss more or less than Alexander Daigle and Bryan Berard?
I'm not trying to dump on the guy, I just have a hard time giving up half of a team for a guy who's never played a North American pro game in his life. |

It's not like he's playing in Juniors against mid pubescent boys. He's playing against men and has been since he was 16. He's make people in the SHL look silly, that's probably the 4th best league in the world (NHL, AHL/KHL, SHL). He's not going to bust, he might not be Lidstrom, but he's not a bust. At worst he does not get better and is still right now a 3/4 dman.

I'm not projecting him to be a bust, either. I just think when people say things like, "He's the next second-greatest defenseman to ever play hockey," I find that a bit hard to believe, being as he's yet to play one game of NA pro hockey.
Do i think he'll be good/great? Yes, I do. Do I expect him to win 7 Norris Trophies in a 10-year span? I think that's a bit outlandish. |
