Honestly what kicking tires needs to be done? You know what Taveras is as a player and what the likely cost is going to be. He has the leverage. It's going to be fax the agent an offer and they'll get back to you, or not. - MJL
So not true. Someone like JT the money will be met by just about any team. For him, its more about direction of the team, what influence and control he will have with the team, and possibly more importantly quality of living outside of game. A Fax will not be what gets a yes or no.... |

Going after Tavares to me isn't this insanely asinine idea. Do I think we should do it? No. Have I seen us drop Briere for Vinny or Roenick for Forsberg? Yes. I understand that it might be apples and oranges but it still happened. Tavares offers a lot. |

Exactly and Simmonds has been a special player for the Flyers. Auctioning him off at the draft just doesn't feel right. - Baxter27
Don't agree.
Think that would be foolish. If you don't see him as part of the future or the agent has given you an idea the price would go against what you want to do in the future, I think it is terrible idea to hold onto a player and not get anything in return.

No idea but the image of the injury I saw looks extremely painful. Him having trouble with the puck which eventually cost them is completely understandable. - Baxter27

You can still trade him at the deadline if the team isnt living up to expectations. If they are, you have more time to decide whether Simmonds is part of the future. |

I know I am just a novice hockeybuzzer but I don't think it is so far fetched. Philly sports scene is on the upswing, the Flyers are on the upswing, it's a great market to be a star athlete in.
His age fits with the Flyers window. The Flyers finally have cap space and prospect pool to make it work.
I just see more Pro's to it then con's.

Exactly. If you can get Tavares you do it. He is a perennial all-star and probably HOF player. He makes every team in the NHL better. The question is what your willing to give him and will he take it. There was a time when the Flyers could compete with Toronto and NYR with signing top quality FA.... but it isnt right now. |

You overpay for guys like Tavares any day of the week.
Make your savings in the bottom 6 and don't give out dumb overpaid deals to mediocre players.
The team currently has about what 15 million tied up in in Mac, Lehtera, Weise and Gudas?
Throw another 5 in for Fil. |

The Islanders have just as many Pros and Cons as the Flyers do... first... its New York. Second, they have young talent too. They both have crappy goaltending...
As a matter of fact the only thing that might make a difference is here he wont be the captain and be looked to for the whole leadership package. Might be a pro or con... depends on him. |

Why not?
Rangers are full rebuild. Toronto could go hard but they also have to wonder what matthews will cost along with Marner and Nylander.
I actually see Carlsson more of a target for Toronto for what they need. |

I like good players, really good players, excellent players, as much as the next person. I really do.
If Nolan Patrick hadn't dropped into the Flyers' laps, I would be leading the "Sign Tavares" brigade.
But Patrick did. And to me, because of what I believe I have seen from Patrick, I would prefer to use the money required to sign a Tavares elsewhere on the roster.
I know the Flyers have prospects. I know the defense isn't the worst around, has good pieces.
But I don't love that defense. I don't. It's only his first year, but the reason Sanheim kept getting the hook is because he plays a little soft.
Not saying he needs to turn into Chris Pronger. But he's not as hard on the puck as he could be, and if that doesn't change, this coach isn't gonna put up with it. And to be honest, I wouldn't either. I admire Sanheim's metrics as much as anybody, but the Flyers need more than just underlying metrics when people are cutting across the middle and going to the net.
You have to play a bigger game -- Ghost was getting killed in this series because he wasn't playing big boy hockey. It's OK to be a puckmover and offensive defenseman. But at some point, the puck's in your end and you need to separate people from it with authority.
So to me, you investigate defensive options. I am not naming any names. I haven't looked at free agency.
I think the Flyers could pass on Tavares, snag a 3C, and pump money into a legitimate attempt to infuse a very good defenseman into this lineup that pushes everybody except Provorov and maybe Ghost down a spot |

Carlson is the only legit dman available in free agency this summer
Unless you want to wait until next summer(assuming OEL, Doughty, Karlsson, etc) actually hit the market |

Honestly to me when it actually comes to biggest need I see goaltender and 3C as the biggest concerns.
Another season of Elliot or Neuvirth being to go to guy is throwing away any success in the playoffs. If they want to give a shot to one of the kids they have tried to develop in Lyon/Stolarz I can understand that, and to a point agree with it.
Like the shootout, not enough emphasis is put on goaltending quality imo. |

Then to me, you either keep that cash and see what they are gonna do, while hoping that Sanheim or Morin or Myers blow you away next season, or you use one of the first-rounders as trade bait -- there's always guys out there. Sometimes you can make a move that nobody really sees coming

Would offer Tavares a deal. Not a max contract or anything but something fair. Probably won't get it done ultimately but you gotta be in it to win it. |

The Flyers should sign Eller in July. He plays a solid 200 foot game and can even provide some scoring pop from time to time. He won't break the bank and will solidy their pivots throughout the lineup especially considering Laughton is sort of being Brayden Schenn'd. |

What we should probably be coming to terms with is that we are paying two wingers over 8 million a year in salary for many years to come...and looking at that. Is there anyone else doing that? |
