Well, so much for resting up. Game 1 is on Thursday.

If Geno and Hags weren't hurt, I'd be fine with a 3 day break.

I was reading on Pittsburgh Hockey Now that they spotted Geno with a slight limp. No braces or boots etc. Not that it necessarily means anything, but it's at least some kind of news.

So when you say a team was "outplayed", you mean that the opposing team had more shot attempts? I'd call that the other team having more shot attempts.

Teams are made up of individuals. A team is the collected efforts of the individuals. So if one member of the team is able to give his team an insurmountable advantage, I'd say that his team is the better team, whether that be a skater or goalie.

That's just my view on it.

- jmatchett383

How does a team outplay another?

Team A has most of the possession but can't score - their shots on goal are double to that of team B, but team B counter attacks on errors from team A & scores goals nearly every time they are in the O zone. They don't need possession, they are playing a counter attacking system & are solid on their D helping their goalie by structured defence.

Team A better because their analytics are better & weight of possession. Or team B due to the scoreboard?

I say team B every single time.

You can vary the hypothetical to suit what's you were saying about goalies as well, & it's a realistic scenario.

I would bet that the analytic departments for various teams are already there. They wouldn't need to pay people money to stare at stuff you can find on corsica and make assessments. Any one of us can do that. I bet they pay people in their departments to conduct the manual labor of watching game after game after game and track these kinds of stats for specific players. Sounds brain numbing, but incredibly useful data to have for these organizations.

Micro stats. They do exist & are excellent from the small amount I've seen. I call them 'off the stick' stats.

Wrong thread. This needs to go on Eks thread.

Edit: I can only remember 1 call that you made recently & the Pens got hosed.

And again, I would agree that, especially in a short sample like a playoff series, funny bounces and players playing above/below their norm are going to be factors. I do no believe that "luck" does not exist, simply that it can't be quantified.

As for the examples you gave, I would concede that, in general, the one team's skaters out played the other team's skaters, yes. But I still consider the performance of the goalie a critical part in the team as a whole.

That may seem like splitting hairs, but that's where I stand.

- jmatchett383

I've been saying that for years. A goalie decides the game.

You did say forwards over the age of 28 are useless though.

with the series starting in two days, even best case scenario has it hard to see him not missing some games of it. ugh.

I think he'll rest until they lose. If they win game 1 he wont play game 2, if they lose game 1 he'll play game 2.

Meh I call shenanigans on that report. If it is MCL but not serious enough for a brace or whatnot there would be no limp at all. I would think either he is good to go for game 1 or he basically misses the entire series.

I agree.... I find it hard to reconcile the fact he played well 2nd and 3rd period if game 5 after the injury with the idea it's a potentially serious injury.

I have to think Geno was held out of game 6 in case there was a game 7....

Well the swelling and pain might not occur right away so that is probably why he finished the game.

The Pens are going to rest Malkin until he is 100% healthy or the Pens lose 2 games. If he has an MCL injury he won't play game 1.... nor should he. Brassard isn't Malkin but he is still a legit 2C. Sheahan is an improvement over Bonino and the Pens won the cup with Rowney on the ice last year.

I really hope Hagelin can have a quick comeback. He has been great in the playoffs at both even and on the PK. Could really use him against the Caps PP.

We apparently signed Linus Olund to an ELC. Don’t know anything about him beyond that he was a 5th round pick this past draft.

Yes. Happening soon.

PM was on the radio this morning saying he doesn't think either Malkin or Hags will play game one. Said it pretty matter of fact. Who knows if he has inside info.

Mackey had mentioned that the Pens stated Hags was out with an upper body injury. He said that they have always called it a concussion when that's been the case.

His tweet 3 mins ago said "Good morning from the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, where the Penguins will practice at 11 a.m. Will Malkin and Hagelin be out there? We'll find out."
