When the league hands you two generational players so your franchise doesn’t fold be gracious and enjoy your ride dude but remember how bad the Pens were to get there. - Sinisalo4vr
sports are cyclical. you should never be too haughty because nothing lasts forever, good or bad. to deny the good fortune in getting crosby and malkin is extremely foolish.
that being said, its not always as simple as sucking and waving a wand. their luck in the lottery wasnt as good as edmonton's recent stretch. people forget that malkin was not a number one pick. fleury was a trade up to get as well. its also taken a hell of a lot of developing younger, less heralded prospects and making some shrewd/risky transactions to get there.

and that window will be closing in a few years crosby is already a 13 year vet. malkin right there. let’s see how they do without gifts like those guys, and MAF, staal. will they draft well or fall into the abyss and then get another gift?
we’re just starting to rise. lots more talent on the way.

I give the Pens credit on Murray. Where the F did that kid come from? I remember thinking the Pens were done 2 years ago when Fleury went down. Nope. (frank)! Flyers need a goalie exactly like that. A Shero draft?

third round in 2012. shero actually drafted a lot of these guys
guentzel was third round in 2013. rust third round in 2010.
sheros blunders at the top of the draft were pretty big and obviously pretty memorable, like derrick pouliot.
i think hes gonna have a few seasons worth of leash there. a pretty good turn around in a short time for a team that was about as mediocre as could be in every sense of the word.
given that the first year is in the books, would anyone on here trade patrick for nico?

I would argue that the Oilers were very UNlucky. Yes the went a stretch of picking 1st 4 out of 6 years and did nab McDavid - a huge get! However, two of the other 3 years, instead of Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, Kane, Tavares, Stamkos, Hedman, etc being there, they got Nugent-Hopkins (a decent but unspectacular player) and Yakipov (an unmitigated failure as a first pick). The 4th was Hall, a great player whom they just gave to NJ. So with those 4 #1 picks, they got 1 generational player, one frequent all star player, one better than average player and one utter bust. If the years they had those #1s were shifted even a little, things could have been much different.
The Flyers don't have Phil Kessel. - Lexington Flyer
It was amusing how the announcers were trying to turn Phil's little tussle with G after that monster hit on Hagelin into some act of bravery and a rallying point for his team. Maybe they were amazed he wasn't back on the bench with his head down sucking wind?
Also, in Australia, Hagelin took a dive. (inside joke)
Hopefully Sanheim and Lindblom get sent to the Phantoms - YuenglingJagr
Why? Lindblom gets tossed to the wolves in the stretch drive and didn't fare horribly. Sanheim was in and out of the NHL lineup, but he has been very good at the AHL level.
Let them make their case in camp. Manning is gone. I'd like to see Morin, Myers, and Sanheim fighting hard for that spot. Can they send Gudas down? Maybe there are two spots to be had.

I think he means for the current post-season. If that's allowed.

He means to join the Phantoms now for their playoff run. That was my take anyway.

there is definitely merit to that perspective. i was referring strictly to just sheer number of top picks. like you said, of course so much of it is just when it happens too. my point was mainly that for all of the tanking/sucking, the pens were only ever technically awarded one first overall choice.

I have not watched Nico much outside of his games vs. Philly, but I like what Patrick has shown so far. I would keep him and see how he develops. He has great vision and hands and a head for the game. All things you like to be able to say about a rookie. Centers like that don't drop off trees.
