Well, since they are both only signed through next season, that would seem to be the plan.

Which in my estimation is stupid and again is applying a band aid to a severe wound. Sorry, but even when Elliot was healthy, he wasn't great. That's putting a lot of eggs in one basket that is Carter Hart.

Even if Hart is the real deal, there's no way in hell that Hexy lets him play for the big club without at least a full season in the AHL. That leaves the Flyers with at least another season or two with $hit goaltending with the current netminders. Hexy needs to fix it ASAP.
- aantny88

i'm kinda getting on board with this more and more.

Hextal is going to have assets, sure. But with like 4 MAJOR holes on this team, he can't/won't try and fill all 4 of them this offseason.

the goaltending needs a veteran fix, i'm not sold on Elliot. but who do you get that knows we have a kid we're counting on in like 2 years? it's going to get looked at this offseason for sure. the only way it's going to work is getting rid of one of your other goalie contracts via trade/buy out....so i think this only really gets done if another big trade happens at the draft.

3C needs a replacement AND an upgrade, but there are no UFA really avail for this in the offseason. as much as they need it, i think they bump this down the queue and give either a young guy a look OR really give Laughton the reigns for a bit. i could see this being filled at the deadline this year if neither of those two things work out.

top 6 wing is another real need of this team, and they DO NOT have anything in the pipleine that can immediately contribute here. Lindblom isn't there, and even if he becomes one in the future, he doesn't look like he can be a 20 goal scorer on a top line next season. this is the EASIEST thing to fix via UFA. the problem is the top guys (JVR, KANE) are going to get close to G and 'Chek money. they can't have those 3 type deals going on when trying to resign Provy, 'Neck, in the future. i could see any of the the other top FA's getting closer to 5 (Neal/Nash).

the second top 4 dman is going to have to be one of the young bucks stepping up. with the glut of guys trying to break into the NHL, you have to hope one of them already up here (Hagg, Samhein) really step into that second pairing, allowing one of the dudes chomping at the bit for NHL time to come in. i highly doubt they make a move for this, unless Gudas is traded at the draft.

i'm not worried about fitting a Tavares on the TEAM, just long term under the cap.

yay! offseason is fun!

With the Caps how much is it going to cost to keep Carlson? They already have a lot of money and years tied to an aging core, in theory they could save money by moving Holtby and go with Grubauer.
- ravishingone

That's what a lot of folks are thinking. They also have Samsonov coming in who is, along with our boy Hart, one of the top 2 goal prospects in the world. Samsonov however is 2 years older than Hart and already putting up good numbers in the KHL so he would be considered more of a sure thing.

Cam Ward and Antti Niemi are certified Stanley-Cup caliber goaltenders. Let's trade unknown prospect Carter Hart and some more unknown prospects for one of them.

Are we back to the “always next year” attitude?

Feel like we just spent 30 years doing this.

I saw a proposal on CapFriendly that traded Elliott, Neuvy, Frost, Hart and a 2019 first for Lundqvist...

If they cant trade Nuevirth, I see them signing a veteran to share time for the season after. I don't see Elliot being traded. And he may very be that veteran we speak of after next season.

Either way, it will be the last season we see one or both of them.

They are putting a LOT of faith in Hart for sure.

Hextall has actually drafted a couple of goalies, no?

Sandstrom is still kicking around out there. They liked him enough to sign him to an ELC.

They have the two Russian kids (Ustimenko and Fedotov).

Alex Lyon did well in relief this year and maybe he gets a little better. And who the (frank) knows what is going on with Anthony Stolarz?

In other words, I think Hextall has done a decent job in getting a quantity of goaltenders of varying pedigrees in the system, because you never know which ones will pan out and which ones won't. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hextall continue with that in this draft.

Holtby is playoff tested, so I would be interested. May have to look like a Martin Jones 3 way trade to get done. Elliott is a fine tandem guy at this point in his career, but to carry the load, no thanks. I want to give them the best chance to make the playoffs again next season. In a lot of ways, they got lucky making the playoffs using 4 goalies.

And that was my biggest coaching beef with Dave Hakstol this year.

There was zero reason to run Elliot out there as much as he did before Elliot finally broke down.

You should also toss in Clarkie's false teeth, Barry Ashbee's retired number, and Kim Batiste.

I agree with all of this. He has gotten the goalie cupboards to levels I have never seen with this organization.

Yes, they are ALL prospects and none of them could pan out. I grant that. But then again, even if 2 pan out, that is pretty good odds.

The others can be used, along with other prospects, to fill holes when the time comes. I don't think it is that time yet.

I guess I am a little more patient than I have a right to be. I am not looking at it as a 40 year drought. I am looking at it as the Hextall era, where the organizational mentality needed to be changed from the ground up. I'm banking on this team being strong for a long time in the near future.

If you (no one in particular) don't like that I feel that way, that is your problem.

Agree, he has shown an inability to play 50 games throughout his career, I don't think that is going to change. Everything behind him in the organization is a question mark. Not making the playoffs next year is inexcusable unless major injuries occur. Less then 5 million of the cap is dedicated to the 2 top goalies in the last year of their deals, I think it is a no brainer to upgrade.

Considering the most amount of games he ever started in his career was 55, 10 years ago, it was asinine to believe he could play that much.
