Do you not know the rules of CBA? Doughty can’t even sign until July 1, so what the hell is the need to speed things up? - KINGS67
Do you think the King's are going to be dumb enough to wait until July 1st to make this urgent. Let's make sure Karma isn't working during the trade deadline next year or Blake is going to get a taste of what stench she's dishing out.
Flashback to 2001
"Unwilling to sign Rob Blake for the $9.6 million he requested and unwilling to let him walk away as an unrestricted free agent, the Kings traded their Norris Trophy-winning defenseman and rookie center Steven Reinprecht to the league-leading Colorado Avalanche late Wednesday for right wing Adam Deadmarsh, defenseman Aaron Miller, a first-round draft pick in the June entry draft, a player from a group of prospects and unspecified future considerations."

Yes....but the unnamed prospect turned out to be the immortal Jared Aulin !!!
As regards Doughty.......he's certainly not the problem in LA, and it's extremely unlikely the Kings would consider dealing.....but if they did, they would be wise to expand the deal to insist their trade partner also take on one or two of their awful long term contracts....Brown or Carter in particular, even though Brown had a nice bounce back year and Carter is still effective when healthy. Would be a high price to pay, but to get a guy like Doughty, and another expensive guy who can help short term.....pretty sure some team would pony up a fat package of prospects and picks.
Hard for Kings fans to listen to this kind of talk, but....2014 was a long time ago. |

If you're going to get someone to take a crap contract don't think for a moment that won't cost you in terms of value. I find it hilarious you say, "we'll trade you Doughty for a LOT (which he's worth), but you also have to take this slug contract". Tying Brown or Carter to Doughty would mean you'd get LESS than market value for him. |

Are you saying that Doughty likes Karlsson, like, he like-LIKES him? - Aetherial
NO, and must you imagine EVERYTHING as part of your ongoing facisnation with sweaty and aggressive man on man marathon sex?
It’s fine, just not sure this is the forum for that. |

The Kings are contractually prohibited from even discussing a contract extension with Doughty until July 1. The only "discussions" they have had are thru the media. |

is that actually true? |

Yeah but it’s one of those rules nobody takes seriously as no player or agent would rat out a team for it.
Happens all the time. |

how does it work? once the season is over, they can't talk? (if the player is a pending UFA)
assuming if the player is signed another year or an RFA, they can talk after the season ends, right? |

They can’t sign him until July 1,1 year before free agency but the rules on negotiating are murky...I don’t know the exact details , but regardless, it still happens all the time. You’ll know they were in discussions when Doughty signs the biggest contract of his career mere hours after the window opens. |

One big trade (Like Doughty) happens approximately once every three years. To argue about these things seems futile? |

Of course this forum is for that. Did you think it was for intelligent discourse about hockey |

This is all so dumb and anyone trying to have an intellectual conversation about this needs to reconsider some things in life.
YOU CANNOT TALK TO PLAYERS ABOUT SIGNING WITH OTHER TEAMS UNTIL AFTER THE DRAFT
Free Agent Interviews (last updated in 2013)—Unrestricted free agents may meet and interview with potential new teams from the day after the NHL Entry Draft (but not later than June 25) until June 30.

Look, I added a source with actual information about the process so people on this group can understand how the system works instead of speculating. I'm not trying to kill the conversation, but a conversation cannot be logically had yet, nor any speculation until players and teams actually talk. |

That article doesn't address the issue at hand, which was whether a club is allowed to discuss an extension with one of their own players before July 1 of the year preceding the end of the contract. The rules regarding discussions with free agents from other teams are fairly straightforward and are not being contested.
