I dont think it was a confidence thing. Flyers havent really played any better than any other game. Game 5 was identical to Game 3. Flyers played a good first and tires started to fall off. Pens dominated the 2nd and 3rd. The difference for me was that despite a couple weak goals Neuvirth MADE the BIG SAVES the Flyers needed.
Referees on the other hand were horrible. I mean does the league not look at this? It is one thing to miss a call or two but to miss several calls and call nonexistent ones is just ridiculous. Flyers would be out of the playoffs right now if Pens scored on that PP the Pens got when Fillpula was nowhere near the guy who fell. |

Love the instant Karma for Malkin. Try to slew foot a guy and almost tear your knee up. Dirty play by a dirty player. |

I’m confused by the Hakstol quote, about Neuvirth, Bill posted.
"We needed a mindset change, we needed to do everything we could to change momentum and that’s why Neuvy goes in. That’s a tough one on Moose tonight, but from that point on it’s Neuvy’s job to go in and try and close the door and give us an opportunity to dig ourselves back out and change the momentum. That didn’t happen tonight for us," said Hakstol.
Bill, or anyone here, why would the coach say this? What does the coach gain by criticizing the goalie who just won game 5? Is this meant to motivate Neuvirth or Elliott or the team in some way?
Edit: the more I think about it the more confusing it is. He says he changed goalies in the hopes that it would shake things up and motivate the team. It was a desperation move. Then he says it didn’t work? But they won. Wasn’t that the goal? Didn’t it work? - Dkos
Re-read the blog. It makes clear that Hak said it after Game 4. That was part of why it was a surprise that Neuvirth ended up starting last night -- every smoke signal they set out from postgame on Wed through morning skate yesterday was that Elliott would return for Game 5, but it was all a bait-and-switch.

they also got the first goal. team that has scored first has won every game. esp seems important for the Flyers.
The call on Filppula was incredibly bad. the Penguin simply fell. |

Flyers got some bounces but Neuvirth made a lot of key saves that Elliott just wasn't making. Hopefully the refs don't gift-wrap game 6 for the penguins. |

Yup gotta roll with Neuvy in game 6.
His ability to make the big saves is why I wanted him in last night. Like I said yesterday, i’ll Always take a slim chance over no chance and Elliott, right now, gives them no chance. |

The Flyers PK is still a dumpster fire with no adjustments or real urgency. Lots of failed clears throughout the 2nd and 3rd periods. The Penguins made a distinct adjustment on their PK to pressure Giroux immediately and take away any time and space. Would be nice to see the Flyers do some adjusting as well. Still dumbfounded by the Sanheim scratch. He's the 2nd best skater on the back end and makes plays. Looks like a horse out there. Why play Hagg for like 5 shifts? |

And yet there he was last night....one of the key reasons they won. Go figure. - landros 2
Well you can't exactly stand all three goalies in front of the net in a game, so you have to choose one. We won because the team in front of Neuvirth showed up. Neuvirth two soft goals allowed didn't exactly inspire confidence. |

Part of it was goaltending. But the PK played more aggressive for what seemed like the first time in forever. All four guys worked as a unit and pressured the Penguins. The shorty was because of the forwards staying at the blue line when normally they collapse to the face off dots.
They will hopefully not have to PK as much next game, but if they do I hope they stay aggressive. |
