Not very good at reading all the details. - Unholy_Goalie
After all these years, still pulling the classic “reading comprehension” comeback.
It’s a huge win-now move. If Doughty doesn’t want to stay, and we don’t win if next year, it’s a huge fail.
Otherwise, it sets us up with a long term top pairing(Doughty/Rielly). Coupled with Tavares signing, it means we also have two #1Cs locked down long-term.
So that’s a pretty sweet situation to be in. |

Your details came later - and they were still illogical.
By the way, just because the Leafs can offer him an 8-year deal, it in no way means that he can't get more money elsewhere. - Atomic Wedgie

Outside of paying a fortune for Doughty, or paying lots of cash for Carlson the market for dman is razor thin.
The few high quality RFA targets all seem very likely to be retained by their current team. Trouba, Dumba and Nurse all seem like candidates to re-sign.
Dumba might be the most available since they'll have to make some room for him. |

Nope.
"But, if you get him in a trade, now you can offer him an 8 year deal, which is more money than anybody else can offer him. Now, maybe he reconsiders and wants to stay."
You stated you wanted to trade for him, then offer him an 8 year deal, hoping he reconsiders and wants to stay.
Meaning trade 1st, then offer new contract.
Don't try to imply otherwise: your use of the words "reconsider" and more importantly "stay" prove it.

OEL is a UFA after next year.
I can't imagine he wants to remain.
He's not a classic #1, but maybe Rielly can fill that role. |

"Reconsiders" his position on living in the limelight and "stay" in Toronto long term. It would be obvious that a long term extension would be agreed upon prior to making a deal. |

I think Rielly is already a #1. There isn't 30 dmen in the league I'd trade him for 1 for 1.
OEL could take Gardiners left spot and Toronto could run two very strong pairings.
Still Rielly is going to play at least 18 minutes a night at even next year and asking Hainsey to do it again is quite a risky proposition. |

How can he stay somewhere he hasn't been yet?
By the way, this is a rhetorical question.

He absolutely is. Before he got hurt this season he was one of the better d-men in the league. |

Yup. It's the 4th or 5th time this arc already. And the arc has basically only just started. |
