Tonight was (frank)ing sad. It felt like a late january game, not playoffs.

Can't win without Bergeron out? Fugg.

Hopefully with Kadri back and their backs against the wall they'll get it together.

Not impressed with Andersen after 10 playoff games so far. He played that first 2 on 1 poorly.

The past two years, Andersen had worse playoff numbers than regular season numbers and he played 66 games in each season. Considering how many shots he faced this year and the drop off in performance in the playoffs, the Leafs need to make serious changes on their defensive system. They'll also need to have a back-up who can play at least 25, if not 30 games so if the defense isn't improved, at least Andersen isn't constantly barraged all year long. Between McElhinney, Sparks and Pickard, they'll have to figure out who can best take the load off Andersen next year.

I think he got a decent amount of rest in and around the outdoor game and leading into the end of the season. If it's a case of giving a backup 25-30 games then let Sparks come up, otherwise keep him down in the AHL for another year.

If it's total shots faced that's the problem then yes there's systemic flaws in the team and individuals lacking on the blueline.

Stanley Cup winning goalies since 2007/2008:

Osgood: 43 games played, 976 shots faced. (22.7 shots per game)
Fleury: 62 games played, 1,850 shots faced. (29.8 shots per game)
Niemi: 39 games played, 936 shots faced. (24 shots per game)
Thomas: 57 games played, 1,811 shots faced. (31 shots per game)
Quick: 69 games, 1,863 shots faced. (27 shots per game)
Crawford: 30 games, 769 shots faced. (25.6 shots per game)
Quick: 49 games played, 1,183 shots faced. (24 shots per game)
Crawford: 57 games played, 1,661 shots faced. (29 shots per game)

Murray: 13 games played, 355 shots faced. (27 shots per game)
(Playoff goalie)
Fleury: 58 games played, 1,665 shots faced. (28.7 shots per game)

Fleury: 38 games played, 1,181 shots faced. (31 shots per game)
(15 playoff games)
Murray: 49 games played, 1,450 shots faced. (29.6 shots per game)
(11 playoff games)

Looks like having a great goalie like Quick or Thomas comes in handy but the team in front of the goalie is more important (and both those goalies had ultra defensive and possession based teams). That being said, the Cup winning goalies of the past 10 years have had stacked teams in front of them and had a lighter workload during the season with the team in front of the goalie providing adequate defensive help and strong possession in front of that goalie.

1992 - 2007

Giguere: 60 games played, 1,692 shots faced. (28 shots per game)
Ward: 28 games, 773 shots faced. (27.6 shots per game)
Khabibulin: 55 games played, 1,414 shots faced. (25.7 shots per game)
Brodeur: 75 games played, 1,845 shots faced. (24.6 shots per game.)
Hasek: 65 games played, 1,654 shots faced. (25.4 shots per game)
Roy: 62 games played, 1,513 shots faced. (24.4 shots per game)
Brodeur: 72 games played, 1,797 shots faced. (24.9 shots per game)
Belfour: 61 games played, 1,372 shots faced. (22.5 shots per game)
Osgood: 64 games played, 1,605 shots faced. (25 shots per game)

Osgood: 47 games played, 1,175 shots faced. (25 shots per game)
Vernon: 33 games played, 782 shots faced. (23.7 shots per game )(Playoff goalie)

Roy: 61 games played, 1,797 shots faced. (29.5 shots per game)
Brodeur: 40 games played, 908 shots faced. (22.7 shots per game)
Richter: 68 games played, 1,758 shots faced. (25.9 shots per game)
Roy: 62 games played, 1,814 shots faced. (29.3 shots per game)
Barasso: 57 games played, 1,702 shots faced. (29.9 shots per game)

It would be nice to have a the blackhawks blueline over the past 9 years, or a Chara on the blueline logging 30 solid minutes in his prime....

That's a reason I really can't see anyone beating TB out of the East. They're just stacked on the blueline.

Bench the leading goal scorer for Matt Martin.

JVR and that line has been weakest link by far these series.
He won't be resigned anyway - so might as well play younger players in bigger role.

Weren't you the guy that suggested to trade JVR trade deadline?
in that sense your comment is even more stupid than normally

It does appear that without some words of wisdom from the gospel of Aussie before the game, you blokes just refuse to have a go. I will try to be better & get in here before next game. How did my boy Auston play?

The self-aggrandizing optimism of this article, constant references to "later in the series" are a laugh. The 'eafs still suck and they're lucky to have won a game. Most obnoxious thing in the league.

They are laughing because Rask was excellent and Andersen sucked

Andersen needs to steal a game or two for the leafs to win, and so far he's shown he's not going to do it. I hope he turns it around but he's been less than stellar. The leafs played better tonight, but could not execute on their chances. While the Bruins capitalized on every good chance they had.

- Santo_44

You are being kind to Andersen.

We have all seen this out of him. There are 2 Andersen's. The one who looks poised, calm, right position, right angle, sees pucks. Then there is the one who looks like Gustavsson, way too much nerves and intensity overplays everything, down too early, and every save is an adventure.

It's not hindsight. I could see this coming months ago and they should have been able to as well. It was easy to see. If your dad had 3 balls, he'd be a pinball machine. But he isn't. The Leafs didn't have a real chance this year and they should have sold off the guys that are going to walk for free now to recover assets.
- Unholy_Goalie

I disagree,

Not with your guess at the Leafs chances, because a number of us saw that coming also.

I think they had to take s shot. When you have a chance, you take it. Just because it turns out they aren't good enough, doesn't mean it wasn't worth a shot.

You are never going to have a situation where your team is guaranteed to win a cup and this is *the* year you go for it.

Plekanec has been better than every forward not named Marner or Hyman.

The real question is, if I could see it, why didn't they?

Hindsight isn't hindsight if you saw it ahead of time.

pretty disappointing for sure. The only real hope for the Leafs is if Bergeron is out longer.
