Biggest story line of the summer will be if/what they can get for Simmonds. I’m hoping a high draft pick.

I wouldn't mind it, Bozak isn't the best option but it's better than what we currently have . I also thought about JVR possibly returning but not sure if the team would want him back, I would be into the move of getting rid of Simmonds to make room for JVR though but signing him long term which you probably have to do would scare me a bit.
- FreshFlyer

I think Simmonds will bounce back and while I think JVR is the kind of guy who will maintain his scoring numbers, I don't think wing is the most pressing need. The need is at center as Filpulla sadly faded a bit this year and he played in lots of situations. A kid isn't going to replace what he optimally brings. I suppose there's still a chance they could resign Filpulla but he did sag and they need an upgrade there.

I think, or at least hope he has a physical issue. He has had a poor overall season but he also scored 20+ goals and 40 points. That's still not bad. He has a proven track record in this league. I just don't think he is going to radically decline that deeply at 29 or whatever he is.
- MJL

the question isn't his decline at 29. its the decline in the middle of the new contract he is going to demand

Well out cap payroll right now is 58,684,167. If you subtract Lehtera who I believe will be bought out will save us about 3 mill. Same as Umberger previously. Simmonds would net us some prospects and or picks and save us about 4 mill so that puts us at 51 Mill

JVR - 5-6 mill 2-4 years
Bozak 4 mill max 1-2 years
Comeau 2-3 mill 1 year
Leier 800-900k 1 year
Hagg 1 mill As long as we can!
Ward 3-4 mill 1-2 years

Thats only 19 mill out of 27 mill in cap space

- xShoot4WarAmpsx

I would not trade Simmonds unless I was getting a young NHL ready player as part of the return.

I think your're drastically low both in term of cost for some of these players. Why would JVR coming off a 36 goal season sign a deal with a term of 2-4 years? Why would Bozak sign that deal in a free agent class low on supply of centers?

How are they getting rid of Neuvirth and Weise?

Keep Simmonds.

They'd have to sell very low to move/trade him and that's never a good idea. The best scenario is for him to come back healthy, play his typical game, and move him sometime during the season.

Frost isn't that far away. I doubt they sign a UFA Center to tie up the position.

LW on the other hand. They just don't have a lot of depth there. Maybe Lindblom is something in the future. I just don't feel good about him going into the next season penciled in as the 2LW. Weal? Kind of the same for me too.

True but he isnt going to show up next season and be 2nd line material. Minimum 2 years for that.
- xShoot4WarAmpsx

I don't know about that. I can see Lindblom scoring close to 20 goals and playing well on the forecheck and away from the puck. He's a talented player with a nose for the net.

Thing is that that spot fills itself. Patrick has shown late in the year he can handle that 2nd C slot next year. So we are only looking for a 3C. We are not going to spend 5 mill there again. We are going to go with a decent 40 point guy and Bozak fits that. Adding JVR gives us a true 2nd line LW and allows us to be patient with Lindblom. Remember early in this season when we struggled because our 2nd line consisted of Konecny, Patrick and Weal. Simmonds too at times. Weal, Patrick and Konecny ended up getting demoted. Comeau is another decent point getter that will help take some pressure off the top 2 lines. Offensively we did not have too many threats. It was lucky for us that Patrick and Konecny heated up.

Obviously. It's not automatic that Simmonds will not remain a good player well into his 30's. I understand the risk and I think there is merit to exploring a trade but I think many are too quick to write him off.

I think you're over confident about Bozak not costing 5M.

Was hoping Mrazek would catch on with u guys cuz i thought he got a bum deal with the poopty defense in front of him here. Looks like hes too erratic to be a regular NHL goalie

Today you won a ticket to see Doctor J
Front row seat, in free, no pay
Radio in hand, snacks by feet
Game's about to start, you kickin' popcorn to the beat
You finally wake up, Doc's gone to town
Round his back, through the hoop, then you scream "Touchdown!"

I'd package Simmonds with both first rounders to move up to 3 or 4 in the draft. Try to get Zadina or Svechnikov. If so we'd be set for years to come.

@MJL You talk about Cap hits, how about Simmonds? What do you think he is going to get? Probably around 6 mill mark and where is he slotted on this team? 3rd line? Simmonds has to go while his value is high. Simmonds is going to end up like Hartnell. He will get a long contract and be done withing 2 years of that contract

No way to really tell unless we somehow become privy to the offers Hextall receives. Until then, it's all speculation.

That said, it's natural for the fans to overvalue their own players. Coming off a poor playoff, an assumed injury, another less than stellar defensive year, approaching 30 and his UFA year, I don't think his value would be very high at this point in time.

The spot fills itself eventually but not for next season. I'm hopeful Frost delivers ASAP but for this year, the deal was a step backwards and maybe for next year too. They need another center, that's how I see it. Maybe with all the wing prospects who might well be ready next season. Giroux flips back to C next year. It's a ways away.

Remember. GM's see what we see. That's why Wayne's trade value at this time is not at it's peak.

If you were another team's GM, would you trade up for Simmonds knowing that he's going to want to maximize his (perhaps) last contract after next season and if you're correct, will be done after two years?

Yes, he will be costly to re-sign. I'm not playing fantasy hockey and hoping top free agents sign with the Flyers for low term and low money. Simmonds might wind up like Hartnell or he might play well deep into his 30's. That's why they pay GM's the big bucks.

It's also natural for fans to undervalue their players and act emotionally when things aren't going well and overreacting. I think you're drastically underrating his value.

What other GM's are going to do is try and prey on the weak and take advantage of a situation. Try to low ball and steal a player cheaply. Hextall is not that stupid.
