Look at the career he's had so far. He's easily better than any current Leafs dman. - Blazed
He's better than Gardiner so if you can sign Carlson for 7 million and trade Gardiner, so be it. Gardiner is a pending UFA and he's probably going to want 6 million or maybe even more. Might have to trade Zaitsev too because his contract looks like poop right now and if Liljegren is legit, he's a way cheaper RHD option. |

You know he has 2 goals in 3 games right? - Blazed[/quote
he's shown nothing.
someone has to tip in marner's assists on pp - kadri can do that as well |

And yet, still over rated and will be over paid. If they get rid of Gardiner and/or Zaitsev, it makes more sense but unless that happens, it's a potential anchor of a contract just waiting to happen.
Chara was a UFA signed by Boston, Niedermayer sign with Anaheim, Pronger was traded twice, Paul Coffey, Rob Blake, Brian Leetch and Ray Bourque all got traded or changed teams. Does it happen often? Definitely not. Does that mean the Leafs should be blowing their load on potentially overpaid, over rated "can't believe it's not a real #1 D" as a replacement? No.
Keep drafting, keep developing, keep snooping for a good deal, maybe sign a legit 1st line UFA and move Nylander for a legit #1 D who is the same age. There are multiple other options available. - Unholy_Goalie
Jesus you know you've totally given up on looking credible when you have to go back to Bourque and Coffey to make your argument.

The confirmation bias is quite strong in you I see. 2 goals in 3 games is nothing. |

rielly - ??
dermott - liljegren
borgman - zaitsev
leafs d in 2 years from now (zaisev on 3rd pair - contract is not bad looking at salary cap going forward and what he has brought these 2 seasons) |

he's literally been invisible for all 3 games except 2 goals (1 of them insignificant) |

What is invisible to you? You close your eyes? Or just to refuse to acknowledge his play. He leads all forwards in hits, only one behind Zaitsev hit leader. He put Chara on his ass in his own barn. |

I can understand the argument behind not wanting to pay Carlson 7-8mil 6-7 years from now. That argument has merit at least but Rielly-Carlson is easily a top 5 pairing next season. |

I'd counter with did he offend your family or something? I just pointed out he's goal and hit leader for the Leafs forwards through 3 play off games and you counter with he is invisible because I say so.

Honest question what qualifies as something if it's not goals or hits? |

He's a better version of Gardiner but he's not Doughty and after a career year as a UFA, he'll want to get paid like Doughty. It's not worth it.
If you move Gardiner and maybe even Zaitsev and sign Carlson, I'm fine with that. But if you keep Gardiner, Zaitsev and sign Carlson, you've solved nothing and filled up your cap space without getting the bang for your buck.
The Leafs need a legit #1 D. That means a Norris winner or at least candidate. I can't remember the last Norris winner that didn't win a Cup except Subban and A) it was half a season and B) he looks like he's on his way pretty soon.
Phaneuf was a #1 D for a period of time, by default. Doesn't mean he was a good one. The Leafs can blow their load on a guy who plays the most minutes, doesn't mean he's what they need to go all the way. - Unholy_Goalie

Karlsson? - LeafGuy89
Karlsson, Burns and Subban haven't and two out of the three went to the Cup Finals. Karlsson almost did it by himself last year. And when he moves to his new team, it'll be a pretty safe bet he'll at least go to the Finals at some point, if not win it.
Lidstrom, Chara, Niedermayer, Pronger; if you go down the list, pretty much every Norris winner wins a Cup or gets to the Finals at some point. |

For all the morning back readers before I'm forever labelled a Carlson lover, I'm not.
I just finally want a partner for Rielly that can play 20+ minutes a night all situations, RH shot, big, good shot, good skater, in his prime and can kill penalties.
Carlson actually checks off every single one of those boxes and he's a free agent. To trade for something similar will cost a fortune. IMO the Leafs would be foolish not to inquire. |

Trading Rielly+ is also another option to acquire a legit #1 D without overpaying for an over rated UFA. |
