someone did some rough math on this a few weeks back. He made it work, but there were some assumptions on the youngsters contracts. I guess it could happen, but I’d imagine you’d be looking at nearly 41M for Matthews 11, Nylander 6.5, Marner 6.5, Tavares 10, and Carlson 7. If you want to allocate more to Marner and less to Nylander sure, but I’d say the two of them come close to 13M combined no matter how you slice it.

My biggest worry with that proposal is the Carlson signing. Isn't he having a career year? He'll likely get some stupid offers in FA and then have trouble living up to the signing when he falls back to Earth next year. Unless he can reproduce his current production or close to it for the next several years, whoever signs him may end up regretting it.

I WANT to believe that the other GMs are starting to get a little smarter than Chic about over payment. All teams are in the same Cap situation.

Martin has go to. His cap hit is unsustainable if the Leafs want any hope of fitting big name UFAs and keeping all their young guys too. 2.5 million for a 13th forward is just stupid. Might give the Leafs an outside chance at keeping JVR or signing Evander Kane, if he tests the UFA market. Might have to trade Hyman too.

The idea of signing Carlson isn't one I like because he's having a career year playing on an offense first team. He's going to get overpaid and the odds of him living up to that contract are slim to none. That being said, if the Leafs do sign Carlson, Gardiner has to get traded. Having both of them, with Gardiner as a pending UFA, will not work. Best to get a return for Gardiner and use his cap hit to pay (overpay) for Carlson. But Carlson would still not be the best signing nor am I convinced he's a legit #1 D that the Leafs need to stabilize their defensive game.

As for Tavares, it's been said to death, Toronto can't offer him the most money. They literally have to get lucky that Tavares has it in his head that he wants to make less money and play in the pressure cooker of Toronto. I wouldn't bank on it at all. If Tavares costs 12 million dollars, and JVR and Kane cost 12 million, what would you rather have?

Man, MAF has been a beast in these playoffs so far.
