No doubt the pipeline is loaded with viable prospects and that they'll be sprinkled in the lineup over the next few seasons. I still wonder about Hak's tendency to play vets, even when the kids are better and Hexy's poor FA acquisitions, as well as his lack of trades for impact players.

As much as he missed on say Boyd Gordon or Weise, he hasn't missed on anything significant. His only FA signings have been basically fillers. Also who would he trade for the is an impact player? The Schenn trade was more for the picks. And really there haven't been any impact players available that I would really want. Maybe kane but he is also a FA so that is going to cost you assets and money.

Kind of why I wouldn't be mad for them to go after Tavares. It will only cost money. And he could impact the lineup best and his age is perfect to fit into the Flyers window for winning.

PASS on Tavares! The Flyers don't have the cap space for a superstar FA signing. Simmonds at the draft should be interesting and unfortunately, it looks like they should really try and spend for a proper number 1 goalie.

You didn't have a Larsson or Weber to trade.

I was simply making a point that there were players available that would have been worth acquiring.

I am not saying the Flyers did or didn't have the package that would have been needed to pull the trade off.

But lets not act like there weren't studs available to be traded for since Hextall took over as GM of the Flyers.

EDIT:

And knowing the Oilers GM, Chia, who is to say that MACD wouldn't have been enough!!!

The Flyers WOULD have the cap space for it if that was what they really wanted to plan for but, 1) I doubt they'd be the front-runners regardless and 2) I think the money is better spent on beefing up depth. Elliott was signed as a two-year, split-time plan in goal. Would I mind an upgrade? Not at all. But I think they stick with that plan and see how Hart develops next season in the AHL.

I think the plan involves moving away from some of the HB whipping-boy vets in the very near future.

I sure the f*ck hope so! I can't take much more of the Filpulas, Lehteras, Reads and Mannings of the world.

Understand.

Hindsight being 20/20 what has Weber done for montreal?

Hall has worked out for NJ, that was a solid move on their part because I think they stole him.

Getting Patrick was a huge get. He's now allowed the Flyers to go other directions as I thought getting a future top center was a priority.

I could see the Caps blowing it up if they lose in the first round. I would try and get Holtby as a bridge to Hart. He has two more years at 6 something. He would put this team right there in the east I believe.

I would entertain Tavares because I don't think it is taking 10 million and his age fits right in with the Flyers window. Add Tavares and you go down the middle with Tavares, Patrick and Couturier. You can always create some space moving guys like gudas, Simmonds, Raffl, Weal and your already clearing out Filppula and Read. You'll have some cheap youth on the wings.

That's the issue...fillers. Stop gap/band aid players to fill holes for positions that could be occupied by rookies. As this happens, the "core" continues to get older. Sad to say it, but one of the best players in franchise history probably won't come close to sniffing a Cup again

What do you think it would take to get Holtby? Just curious.

Yup. Jay and I discussed his views on the topic over dinner after the game on Sunday and I totally agreed with his assessment. He believes the team isn't READY to beat the Penguins (or Caps) but the cracks are starting to show with the current elite teams and clubs like the Flyers are getting deeper and better. The gap is getting narrower. There's going to be a changing of the guard in the relatively near future, even if this isn't the year it happens.

Contrast that to a columnist who mailed in his half-dozenth "Flyers just aren't as good as (fill in the team name) and have a long way to go" piece that he pulls out every year about this time.

The spots those guys were signed for weren't spots you were going to place rookies? When Lindblom was brought up it was to be a top 6 player. Not a 4th line 7-9 minute guy.

Last time they decided to spend for a big-time UFA goalie, they ended up with a player they bought out less than 2 years later and who they're going to still be paying for the next 6 years or so.

Now, granted, that contract was atrocious. But I'm not sure who's available as a UFA that you could sign to a 2-3 year deal (when Hart hopefully should be ready) that's going to be a clear upgrade to Elliott.

Jake has really disappointed me so far in this series.

With the way Patrick is playing, if Jake was matching his level of play, that line would be flat out dominating games.

- ggunky

No doubt, for me, Jake has been the biggest disappointment by far in this series.
