Getting good value for a good player. Yeah, that's insane. Totally bat-poop!
- Unholy_Goalie
Maatta was highly touted back then. They couldn't even get pouliott. He was supposed to one of the best up and coming d prospects in the league. They weren't getting him and the teams top forward prospect for a winger with kessels contract coming off the season he had. |

I think Pittsburgh should've traded Malkin for Kessel.
Dubas is a fool for not getting good value.
How on Earth does a tank year re-build Kessel's value anyways? - Blazed
Kessel was their best talent, why not trade JVR who would have gotten a lot more cause of his contract?
And Bozak was coveted at the time to. |

Ask Winnipeg what they got for Kane. Or Tampa Bay what they got for Drouin. Asking for Kapanen and Maatta wouldn't have been that crazy of a price tag, especially if you consider what they gave up to get Kessel in the first place. Not anywhere near your hyperbole of Malkin.
He scores all the goals and points and you can blame his terrible defensive stats on the fact that he plays for a poop team. At some point, a team that needs scoring for a playoff run steps up and pays the price. |

How thick are you. They were starting a rebuild and wanted to get rid of kessels contract. Jvr was younger and cheaper. They had no idea how long the rebuild would take. They didn't want a 33 or 34 year old kessel making 8 million when They were ready to compete. |

The point was to get worse not keep their big money long term top talent.
It wasn't either/or, but the time to move on from their top forward and top dman was then. Keeping JVR had no bearing on their intention to move Kessel.
Could JVR got more? Pure conjecture we'll never know. Would the team be better now? Impossible to say.
Leafs made the playoffs by 1 point last year, no JVR or Bozak easily could've shifted that balance the other way. |

Maatta was considered a good prospect but he was never Dahlin. He was suppose to be a defensive top 4 D and that's what he is. He wasn't Trouba or Ekblad or anybody else like that who was as offensively dangerous as he was defensively stable. |

Maatta was more highly touted than sergachev and drouin was 22 coming out of his entry level. |

Well then why didn't someone else make a better offer? The entire hockey community was extremely aware of his availability.
News flash, Kane got a conditional first, mind blowing. |

Maatta was coming off a 29 point rookie season. He wasn't considered a defensive dman. Your looking at what he's become and not what the hype was at the tjme. |

Because they didn't exactly have somebody like Lou running the team. Pittsburgh jumped on a good price and the Leafs pulled the trigger too quick.
I said what Winnipeg got for Kane, not what Buffalo got. |

Lou would of gotten more and dubas got worked in his first big deal by a veteran gm. Leafs got some good pieces that are helping them now.
What blows my mind is that the leafs just beat a team that could be cup favorites and just to be negative you're in here complaining about the return we got for kessel 3 years ago. |

Oh so a 23 year old forward and 24 year old dman both with big potential on affordable contracts in a package deal is somehow a comparable now?
That's your case? |

I'm sure if I just stop posting you'll argue with yourself into some sort of strange satisfying stalemate.
Enjoy! |

9 defensemen were drafted before Maatta and scoring 29 points on the Penguins isn't exactly setting the world on fire offensively. I'm sure there were a couple of "give it to Crosby and watch him score by himself" moments that year.
Again, pretty fair value for Kessel who could score 29 goals, never mind points, with his eyes closed.
Maybe they wait another year and see Maatta's numbers don't really improve and now he's not as "hyped" as you seem to think he was. |

Well the last few pages of this thread are a headache just waiting to happen.
That trade is long gone, and our team is much better now so why even debate it.
Let's move on, finally and enjoy our big win last night! Go Leafs Go! |

Glad to see some of his old fans lamenting their loss. |

That should have been approximate price tag and if they had to rebuild his value by keeping him another year to put up better numbers, so be it. A top-nine forward and a defensive defender wouldn't have been the most astronomical price imaginable for a 30+ goal, 70+ point winger especially when he turns into a 90 point player beside Crosby and Malkin. - Unholy_Goalie
We already know both kessel deals weren't great.
In the past who cares now.
We are fighting for our playoffs life....just had a big win.
Andersen made 3 series saving saves.
Pleks and Moore did a great job.
Boston's top line.....0pts.
Let's do it again thursday |
