You folks realize were talking about the leagues best D man who's 27, right?

He had 43 EV points, on the 2nd lowest scoring team in hockey.

He's the elite of the elite at his position.

They can have any 2 players on this team that aren't named Jack + whatever money he wants

- sbroads24

28 in a month, 29 when his next deal starts, 37 when it ends

10.5-11.5 aav probably through his mid 30s

Forget Karlsson, this team is way to fay away from making any progress. Money should be focused in other directions. I know it sounds crazy because he's the best in the league but we don't need him now.

He will also be 29 when his new contract kicks in and he is going to get $10 plus million a year for 8 years.

He also has had 2 major leg/foot injuries.

If you can guarantee that his production doesn't take a nose dive on years 5-8 of his next contract (when he is 34-38) then yes by all means I would pay whatever it would take to get him.

But we aren't talking about a 24 year old Karlsson we are talking about a Karlsson that is almost 30

I don't see that being an issue for one of the best skaters in the game.

We'd have at minumum, 6 seasons of elite hockey from an elite, elite player.

Which will be extremely difficult and expensive, players hate it there.

Time to reset, we loooooooose this much next year using this approach, I'll eat like Gerbe for a month

- washedup20

True...
I’m kinda torn
Bc i do think guys like Tavares, Carlson, JvR & Neal would help us A LOT
But we’d likely have to outbid everyone to get them here
And that’s generally a bad idea

I'd like him a lot, obviously. But I'm not taking on that horrible Ryan contract and trading our best defenseman plus our second-best offensive forward/best defensive forward to get older.

His new contract will kick in when he is entering his 11th pro hockey season...

11th!!! It would run until his 18th pro season.

That is a ton of hockey.

I have a feeling his body is just going to say f it and give up on him when he is 35.

That's like saying i'm the second best basketball player on the court when me and LeBron are going 1 on 1.

A team with Karlsson, Eichel, Mittelstadt, plus top 4 pick is an actual core that resembles what cup teams have (assuming CM is really good)

I’m worried about his foot

Also,
Karlsson has a NTC
Hard to imagine he’d be ok coming here,
when teams like Tampa & Vegas are interested

It would also be a team with contracts such as Okposo, Bogosian, Ryan - almost 20 mil

And a defense consisting of

Karlsson
McCabe
Scandella
Beaulieu
Bogo
Guhle
Nelson

That deal would make our cap and our team worse

When Lebron has gone through 2 major leg and foot injuries come talk to me.

You are one that speaks volumes about you're paying contracts for their future worth and not their current worth. I am not doubting Karlsson will be worth it in years 1-4 of his new contract, it's the 4 years after when you have Eichel coming due for a new contract, Mittelstadt being worth $8 million a season and have the top 4 draft pick making $7 million.

I mean I'd love to have Karlsson, but 89 is right, at this point in the game adding Karlsson isn't the play to make here.

I am not saying Karlsson isn't great, I am questioning how long is he going to be great for?

Can ANYONE really imagine Karlsson waiving his NTC to actually come HERE?

I can’t

Seems like a moot point

Not to defend Bobby Ryan, but we'd be adding a guy who's a .5 PPG player, and a D man who's almost at a PPG player.

Ryan had almost the same EV production as ROR in almost 20 less games.

I don't see how on earth that makes us worse.

33 points at $7.25 million cause you know Ottawa isn't eating any salary to get rid of him.

Next year we'd still be paying

5 for Moulson
5.5 for Pommer
6 for Ryan - edit: meant okposo
5.4 for Bogo
7.5 for Ryan

There's 31 mil

With a rookie at 2C and only Scandella ready to be top 4

Then the next 4 years you're guaranteed to carry 13.5 in Okposo and Ryan, while Karlsson is eating up 11 mil on the wrong side of 30. It's just a terrible idea

It's Tim Murray logic: overpay for one good player, give up other good assets, and take on horrible contracts in the process.

But under this model, we also get older.

I agree with Fitz, never gonna happen, but the idea is insanity
