Seriously? We have to beg people to stay? Since when?
- Slump Buster

Idk about “begging ppl to stay”

But yeah,
in general we are gonna have to overpay ppl to play here

This is where GM's need to identify those they can win without and trade them and sign the ones they need.

We're not at that point yet. And....like 89 says, they start winning, contract demands start to lessen, provided you sign them long term before they go to FA.

- gcomella34

If we didn’t have O’Reilly this year,
who would our 2C have been?

Larsson? Rodrigues?

That’s not how u “start to win”

I know O’Reilly isn’t “great”
We need “good” players too

This is what you’re not getting. Neither of those guys are ready to be impact players on a playoff team. On the 16 playoff teams they could be on the team, but in supporting roles.
Give them a couple of hundred NHL games before you start heaping expectations on them. If they win those positions come fall I assure you it’s by default.

- Larsson_fan

A third line center and utility guy are supporting roles. Calling Mittelstadt someone that can competently center a third line and Rodriguez a quality utility guy is hardly heaping expectations on them. The defense is attrocious we have literally no first line wingers

yeah seriously that's some next inferiority complex. these guys have zero leverage as RFA's with offer sheets being taboo

I’m talking about when they’re about to become UFAs

It’s certainly pointless to consider an ELC a bargain when talking about having to “pay players the Buff-a-tax” to keep them here

An ELC is irrelevant in that context

If Mittelstadt’s contract is a bargain when he’s RORs age...
then what you’re saying makes sense

However,
we are gonna have to overpay him too

And we are likely gonna have to overpay Sam at some point to keep him here

And Guhle

And so on, and so on...

- jdfitz77

Simple question, do you want to keep this core together? Eichel, RoR, Sam, and Risto....the remaining GMTM core.

It's easy suggest trading other guys. Most of them are untradeable or have very limited value. It's fun to pretend we win a lottery, sign an unrealistic free agent, or a second tier prospect turns into a top line player. When you boil it all down, it really becomes: build around this core or make changes. High salary players bring back salary. Odds are they aren't trading these guys for picks and young prospects. If RoR is as good as you think he is, he'd bring a great return.

All the big fish get overpaid in free agency and with the RFA collusion you never have to overpay to keep your own guys

Why can’t u just throw something out there?
Of course none of us “know”

For example:
St.Louis
I’d take Vince Dunn(D) & Robert Thomas(C), or someone like Kyrou...

But if we were getting 2nd tier guys like Tage Thompson or Klim Kostin,
I’d be p!ssed

Idk if any of that is possible...
but i can still give examples of a trade I’d like vs one that i wouldn’t

- jdfitz77

I want Kostin the most out of all 5 of those prospects.

I think we can build around this “core” and still get to be a really good team

That said...
if it’s a good trade, then sure

Just not a trade like the Kane one

Kane has off ice issues and was never viewed as highly around the league as people in Buffalo viewed him.

O’Reilly seems to have the opposite perception.

Like i said before...

Last night, we had a very reasonable convo about O’Reilly & what to possibly move him for, IF we moved him

Bashing him over & over again serves no purpose though

I don’t think saying he’s highly regarded around the league is bashing him but alright

Rather just run lottery simulations for the next 2 weeks?

I'm sure JB will give plenty of ammunition to play with tomorrow.

Well what good does continued bashing of O’Reilly do?

Yeah yeah... i get it
-Faceoffs don’t matter, except when they do
-Can’t give the guy credit for being good on the PP, bc it doesn’t matter as much as 5v5
-he’s really good at turnovers vs takeaways, but we don’t trust the statisticians

Round & round we go

I wanna keep O’Reilly, but at least I’m willing to talk about some players we could possibly get in return for him

365 won’t even do that

But i guess the haters can just keep bashing him & complaining
Just don’t see that as being productive

If you're willing to trade RoR, Sam, or Risto in the right deal, then it's a boring conversation.

I think youre bang on. Forget the contract, its only a hair high by his comparables, and it isnt a problem until its a problem. Besides, its not like hes holding anyone back or occupying anyones spot.

Idk what u expect me to say?

I gave a pretty reasonable answer

Dumping any of those guys for “parts” would be freaking stupid

I’ve tried to say before that even if he is overpaid by 1-1.5mil that it’s not having an effect on us

It’s Buffalo, we have to overpay
Sucks
But that’s the way it is

I agree,
it’s not stopping us from making any potential move

Moulson, Pominville, Bogosian, Lehner...
those are the contracts we need to rid ourselves of ASAP

I don't begrudge him those things, in his position I would absolutely take advantage of all the things he does, and more. Life is too (frank)ing short, do what you can when you can.

But he just doesn't realize that things cost money, and most people don't make enough of it. He was incredulous that a poster didn't own a car a couple months ago. Like "how is that even possible?".

Again, I don't think it's malicious. He just doesn't think for a second before he posts some things.

- Wetbandit1

It’s just his privelige. Hasn’t had to work a day in his life for anything.

If you really want an argument so much, I'd gladly point out that our long term contract situation effected the decision not to extend Kane. RoR is one of those deals, so it has had an effect.

Bullpoop. Kane is gonna ask way more than he is worth, losing him to free agency would have been unnaceptable , and you would be forced to pay him more than he will get elsewhere...like 7- 8 million per. Has nothing to do with not being able to afford it and everything to do with not being crazy.
