no doubt those are key, along with line matchups in pittsburgh. they dominate at home.
- hammarby31

FWIW, here are 5 keys if the Flyers are gonna win this series

1. Star players better get their cardio in
They aren’t beating the Pens with their scrubs playing 15-18 mins per game. The top 2 lines along with the top D pair better be ready to play massive minutes

2. Elliott needs to go on hot streak
The Flyers wont win this series with solid goaltending. Elliott needs to ramp it up and go on a tear.

3. DONT TAKE PENALTIES.
No explanation should be needed

4. Get traffic in front of Murray and forecheck the hell out of the Pens thin D.

5. Keep your cool and initiate, not retaliate. Let the Pens, especially Malkin, lose their cool and get off there games. Konecny could be just the man for this.

Key to this series will be GOALTENDING!!!

If Elliot can stop from giving up the bad goals and untimely ones and make those key saves when needed, we stand a good chance. Let's be honest, our defense will make gaffs in this series and Elliot needs to step up and hold the fort down when they do happen. I think we can score with the Pens honestly. As well we need to do our best to not take stupid penalties and stay out of the box which is not rocket science.

They should've never got Lucic. That was a unnecessary move.

Their biggest issue has been failure to draft and develop D men. Remind you of anybody? They should've moved back in a couple of these drafts and targeted some D men they could build around. They drafted Hall, RNH, Yak, Driasital & McDavid. They had to know defense was going to come back and bite them.

- hereticpride

Yeah. So don't sign lucic, draft some d and keep hall. The massive contract to draisaitl is amazingly bad.

Hasn't the amount your allowed to bury in the minors gone up each year? So maybe you bury him in Lehigh next year like Read.

They just moved Marody for a 3rd round pick because they didn't see a future for him here.

they have RFA's in:
Stolarz
Hagg
Mrazek
Leier
Lyon
Morin
Wilcox
Martel
Goulbourne

UFA's:
Muse
Tokarski
McDonald
O'Neill
Manning
Oduya

Read
Filppula

So there will be guys not getting contracts next year. I could see some RFA's not getting QO with the prospects that could be in Lehigh next year.

I think the Flyers are fine with contracts.

goodbye to those guys for sure. on the fence about amac and read.

They've drafted almost no NHL talent outside of their top picks the entire time. That is the main issue. They never had any depth in the organization and went through multiple coaches and GMs during the process. Same as Buffalo, same as Arizona. Arizona actually looks like they are turning it around. I do have some faith in Botterill too

I haven't really kept up with them this year that much. Draisiatl was fire the year before. I'm guessing not so much this year?

CMc not AMac. Phantoms captain with no real shot of playing for the Flyers, so he could go elsewhere

I find it amazing that Edmonton has messed this up.

They sign lucic and give draisaitl massive coin. Trade hall and eberle because they can't afford them and although they had made progress last, had to tinker with it and it's gone off the rails.

Then you trade those forwards for help on D but you trade like CBS and not get some schlub outta NJ. They needed to come away with at least a top 20 D-man in that trade and they didn't even get close.

I said it earlier. i think he is the x-factor. i think his skill set is made for this series. There will be chirping. There will be some cheap stuff. He is the Flyers Pat Verbeek. If he controls himself and doesn't go too far over the line I think he will be huge for the Flyers.

Key to the series is to win games. Win more games than the Penguins and they have a pretty good shot at winning the series.

they can help elliott (#2) by doing (#3 & 5). all of those things go hand in hand.

i don't think traffic with murray is super important...he's a guy i think can be beat cleanly. capitalizing on their oddman rushes will be key. if you look at the last game they had against them, they pens were loose on D in the first period we had a bushel of oddmans and they failed to get the shot off or hit the net and cash in on a rebound on all of them. the pens ultimately regrouped and their top guys did the damage. they MUST convert those chances.

regarding #1 point...this where i think the games in pittsburgh are so crucial with the flyers getting the right guys on the ice at the right time and giving them the minutes they need. not sure hakstol will do that.

Yeah. Seems as though.

Tsn has Pitt in 6. I'll be surprised if any media outlet has the flyers winning or going 7

I think playing with a lead will help a lot too. Flyers only have 2 lines that I think can get through the NZ when the Pens have a lead

Agree.

Goaltending is the key to any series. Many goalies have gotten hot enough to carry their teams to the finals. Some even went on to win the Cup.

Usually, though, it's an overall team effort on D with a huge bump from secondary scoring, but it always starts from the backend.

he needs to be a factor. i don't see him as the super chippy, plays on the edge kind of guy some do. i don't think he needs to do that...i'd rather he focus his energy creating offense.

this is where their D scoring can be a factor...gost and provorov don't exclusively play with the top guys, and sanheim certainly can score (even though he's only got 2 goals). amac and manning even have some ability.

i'd certainly prefer they not chase the game.

In regards to this would you maybe try to sneak/double shift guys like Voracek/Couturier/Giroux onto your 3rd and 4th lines at times to maybe help with an unfavorable match-up. Can't do it all the time but maybe at a spot you think you could get burned?

I do too.

But there will be some of that extra stuff. And we have seen guys like Malkin, Crosby and Hornquist get dragged into it.

If the situation holds from their practice:
Adam Kimelman, @NHLAdamK

No changes to Flyers lines at first practice of postseason
Giroux-Couturier-Raffl
Lindblom-Patrick-Voracek
Konecny-Filppula-Simmonds
Laughton-Lehtera-Read

Leier, Weise, Weal the scratches

I already see the Flyers pretty much going 2,2,2 on each of the first 3 lines to spread out the wealth to match the Pens

Interesting phrase. The first I heard it was from Ken Hitchcock when he was here. Does it go back further that that?
