I thought the kids played some real solid games since his return. I watch him and his decision making and think to myself....’this kid is starting to get it ‘ ...he’s starting to make those high percentage defensive plays with regularity that he some times got a way from early on....this playoff experience is only going to help.

I thought sanheim was great and has been solid. This playoff experience is going to be huge and advance the window to win imo.

We'll probably lose out to the champs but put forth a good effort and learn what it takes.

Also really nice to see the other kids, Patrick and Konecny elevate their games to another level....I thought Konecny was good last year but I didn’t think he would be that prolific of a scoring threat this early on in his career. He been fantastic. Obviously he needs to clean up some defensive stuff....but that will come. He seems coachable.
Patrick seemed to click the switch about 20-25 games ago....even at 19 you see why this kid was # 2 overall and has been talked about being a cornerstone of a franchise since he was 16. I beleive his ceiling is exactly that....a number one Center...face of the franchise player.

I wouldn’t say probably at all.....I think it’s a toss up. The Flyers can play with these guys. Yes they didn’t have a good year against them, but like the Flyers, the Pens have some weaknesses that can be exposed.

The way things are going for Philly teams right now, I wouldn’t bet against an upset!

FWIW, here are my regular season player grades for the 17-18 Flyers. I'll do this as 2 posts because it will be a bit long.

First up, the forwards:

Claude Giroux: A+
The captain had as great a bounce back year as I've ever seen and if he doesn't win the Hart trophy, we need to riot!

Sean Couturier: A
I always thought he could be a 20 goal, 50 point player, but what he did this season was just off the charts. He is as good a two way player as there is in the NHL and he should be a slam dunk Selke trophy finalist

Travis Konecny: A
You could not ask for a better sophomore season than the one we got from TK. We are watching the development of a star player and I can't wait to see what he does in the playoffs!

Oskar Lindblom: B+
Plays a complete game and started to add the offense that was missing down the stretch. His addition to the lineup really solidified the top 6.

Nolan Patrick: A-
Fought through not being able to train properly last summer and early season concussion to really come on and be one of the Flyers best players in the 2nd half and especially down the stretch. You sometimes forget he is only 19 and he looks like the future 1C that scouts predicted he would be.

Jake Voracek: B+
He can dominate games at time and his production is excellent. His grade would have been higher except he has too many defensive lapses and really needs to clean that up.

Michael Raffl: C+
He came up big when needed at the end of the season at that moved him from a C to a C+. He is what he is, and had an so-so year overall.

Valtteri Filppula: C
Really seemed to lose a step as the season wore on, but he was a key player early and deserves credit for that. However, his matching up against either Crosby or Malkin in the upcoming series scares the hell out of me.

Wayne Simmonds: D
Man, I really hope he's trying to play through an injury, but even if he is, that is no excuse for some of the brain dead defensive gaffes he has made this season. Other than the pp, where he was at least ok, he was pretty much awful all season. They need more from him if they are going to pull off a 1st round upset.

Jori Lehtera: C
Guy has limitations, but he works hard and will usually make a solid, safe play when the puck is on his stick. In a 4th line role he is ok, not great, but he usually won't kill you. I just wish Hak wouldn't use him so much in key late game situations, but that isn't on the player.

Scott Laughton: C+
Kid can skate and has a good shot. Needs to focus more on the defensive side of the game though. If he can improve that, he has potential to be a 3C in this league.

Matt Read: B-
It's a short sample, but Read's introduction back into the lineup gave the PK at noticeable boost and improved the 4th line overall. He is also a good player that can be used late to lock down a lead.

Jordan Weal: D
Did not produce nearly enough offense to make up for his generally soft board play and so-so at best defensive play. He was a disappointment.

Taylor Leier: C-
I never expected him to be much at the NHL level and except for a few good games early in the season, he was exactly what I expected him to be.

Dale Weise: F
Guy is 6'2, 210 and a good skater, but he has less heart than the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz. His apparent lack of effort or care just makes me sick and I hope he enjoys riding buses in the AHL for the next 2 years. Hands down, he's the worst FA signing in the Hextall era.

Next up, the D and goalies

Man I can only nitpick at this, tbh

I'd give Lehtera a C-. He just can't keep up.

I'd give Jake an A-, dude is in the top 3 in the NHL for assists.

Simmonds grade is harsh but I can't argue with it

Like the lists....the only one I kinda thought was a low grade was Simmonds....yes he has struggled of late, but I’m more on a B- for him or C+....still played some very solid games early on and will need to bring his snarl going in against Pitt.....I also loved the fact of what you see in Lindblom. He really did solidify the 2nd line....Patrick has been better...and he helps with some of Jakes defensive short comings...this kid is only going to get better.

Ok, onto the D and goalies 17-18 player grades:

Shayne Gostisbehere: A
Ghost put up fantastic offensive numbers and is always a threat to be a game changer, but even more importantly, he greatly improved his defensive and overall play and showed the ability to thrive in a top pair role.

Ivan Provorov: A
For this kid to have just turned 21 and be doing what he is doing is simply amazing. He is an every situation stud Dman and is only going to get better. He will anchor the Flyers D for the next decade.

Andrew MacDonald: B
AMac makes some really gaffes now and then, but overall he had, by far, his best season as a Flyer. He's also shown that he can be a great partner for a young player which is a big asset to this team.

Travis Sanheim: B
Struggled early but leaving him in the press box for a month was just stupid, if they weren't going to dress him, he should of been sent right down. However, the time in LHV absolutely helped and he was a different player when he returned. He needs to dedicate himself to getting stronger this off season, because if he can do that, he will be a top pair Dman.

Radko Gudas: D-
Gudas was one of the biggest disappointments on this team. He need to be and should of been one of the better Dmen on this team. Instead, on way too many nights, he was the worst. He finally seemed to play ok the last 2 games of the season and hopefully he can put his struggles behind him and be his old self in the playoffs.

Brandon Manning: C
To expect Manning to be any more than a 3rd pair Dman is simply to expect too much. He is what he is and played about as well as can be expected.

Robert Hagg: B
I wish Hagg had given this kid more time to try and establish some chemistry with Gudas because he is simply, even as a rookie, clearly a better player than Manning. Hopefully they find a way to get him at least some playoff experience this spring.

Johnny Oduya: Incomplete
Looked pretty bad in his one game, but it was one game and I can't grade a guy on that small a sample size.

Brian Elliott: B
Before going down, Elliott was having a strong season and provided the calm, steady goaltending this club so badly needed. Hopefully, the last 2 games allowed him to work the rust off because the Flyers are going to need him to be huge if they are going to pull off a first round upset.

Michael Neuvirth: C-
His play when healthy was fine, but the guy just cannot stay healthy or be relied on in any way. Hopefully they can find a way to unload him this offseason.

Petr Mrazek: D+
Had a few good games right after the trade, but was pretty much awful after that. Did a nice job bailing out Neuvirth in his last start though and that inched his grade up a tad. Either way, I expect the Flyers to just let him walk this offseason.

Alex Lyon: B-
Really couldn't ask much more from a rookie goalie who is far from a blue chip prospect. He did a serviceable job and it would have been unreasonable to expect any more.

Giroux is the hart. An incredible season across the board. 102 points, 34 goals, 58% faceoff %, +28, just 20 PIM. Higher points per game than everyone’s favorite Taylor Hall.

2. His way too many, flat out awful defensive plays

So will Hagg get any playoff experience?

Therein lies another problem with his benching. No way the coach will put him in now. Will he get thrown in if they go down a quick 2-0 in the series?

I am hoping the TK on the third line with Flip and Simmonds ends immediately. TK is making plays but those other two can't keep up and don't have the skill level to make plays in tight quarters.
I'd rather see Laughton on third line wing at that point. I understand the reasoning of the decision to try and spread out scoring but it isn't really working.

No arguments on that list....Gudas changed his game to avoid more issues with league....that is easy to see...but the problem with that is that is who he is....take away his physicality and he hesitates because he’s not that player.....I personally hope he ramps it up against the pens and makes this series about him....let the Pens focus on ‘dirty Gudas’ ....a less focused Pens team is a beatable Pens team.

I'd give AMac and Sanhiem a B- here and Lyon a C+ relative to their to their teammates. Hagg is too high, I'd give him a C+. I don't love him. Transition game died on his stick if he didn't dish it off to his D partner. Got the job done defensively though.

Wtf, the Flyers just had an amazing game, clinching the playoffs. Now playing the Pens in 1st round and the 1st few pages of these comments are talking about the Sixers, Phillies and Eagles. You gotta be kidding me, this is turning into WIP. The end is near. Btw best players in this city are:

G
Couts
Voracek
Provarov
Ghost

Not some NBA player who teams look to put to the Free Throw line on purpose.

Please don't respond I'm tuning into WIP to see if I can hear some talk about Giroux's game yesterday.

After the last two games I think Hak will stick with that set up...Raffl produced and Konecny still looked dangerous.....if it starts to faulter he can always go back to the TK-Giroux-coots line.
