Is it really that surprising that the Devils made the playoffs playing in the Leastern conference? 45% of the teams in that conference were complete crap.

haha great blog!

The thing about the draft lottery is that it really has fixed tanking. I mean, teams will still be rebuilding, but the last place team has roughly 50% chance of picking 4th. No longer guaranteed a top two pick.

The Leafs were the first winner of the new lottery odds and they happened to pull it off with a 20% chance. In reality, 4 out of 5 years the last place team will not pick first.

Of course, drafting top 5 or top 10 for many seasons in a row is still a great way to build a core.

I guess what I'm saying is (frank) BUFFALO!

If the Rocket Richard was retroactively awarded, it would look like this:

Bobby Hull: 7
Alexander Ovechkin: 7
Phil Esposito: 6
Gordie Howe: 5
Wayne Gretzky: 5
Charlie Conacher: 5
Maurice Richard: 5

Amazing. Possibly the greatest goal scorer of all-time by time he retires.

As for the Nashville Predators winning the "bad luck" award, historically speaking, I don't think any other final standing position has produced more Stanley Cup wins, Stanley Cup Finals or Conference Finals appearances than 1st overall. I think the only thing that might stop the Predators are injuries (like Johansen going down last year) and fatigue from having a short off-season, otherwise, they have pretty much everything they need to make it happen.

In the past 30 seasons, the Presidents Trophy winner has done the following:

Stanley Cup Wins: 8
Stanley Cup Finals: 3
Conference Finals: 6
Semi Finals: 7
1st round exit: 6

27% winning the Cup, 37% making the Cup Finals, 57% Final Four.

In the 59 seasons prior to that, the 1st overall team did the following:

Stanley Cup Wins: 30
Stanley Cup Finals: 7
Conference Finals: 1
Semi Finals: 11
1st round exit: 10

50% winning the Cup, 62% Stanley Cup Finals.
