Regardless if he was or wasn’t, Pat still had Mogilny and ROR has nobody’s close to that.

People want ROR gone, they’ll get it. I believe Pierre Lebrun and the players in the league and I think it would be a mistake. Unless he is a big time wiener and can’t get along with Eichel, but it better not be because Jack’s not playing to potential. 10 mil is a lot to pay a 25 goal scorer too.

It absolutely is. But who are teams worried about shutting down when they play us?

The guy who is a master on the faceoff dot? Or the guy who can make PK Subban turn inside out?

- sbroads24

Teams weren’t worried about Sharpe, Hjalmarsson, Seabrook, etc...
but they were still a big part of the Hawks winning their Cups

I don’t have the stats to back it up, but I swear ROR is out against the other team’s best every game. Maybe Ottawa was the exception to the rule.

ROR was a year away from FA. stop trying to bend the figures to fit your argument when you accuse everyone else of doing the same.

If you trade for a cost controlled player, you don't have to overpay to keep him. Not if you're good at your job.

- Sabresfan-365

Ok...
“Cost controlled player” like who?
And for how long are they cost controlled?

Can we get “cost controlled” players for ROR?

Give me some type of example of what u think we can do

Because i guarantee,
after that cost controlled deal is up we are gonna have to overpay to keep the player here

Now that’s an argument I’ll listen to
Makes sense

BUT
The return needs to be legit,
not what we got for Kane

AND
Let’s bring in a “defensive” center at least, bc i don’t think we want Jack or Casey taking on those responsibilities

- jdfitz77

Even if it was for nothing. (I think he’d bring back a good return right now) His value is only decreasing as time goes on.

This team is 2-3 years from seriously competing. A 30 year old 3rd line center with a big cap hit isn’t a good get

At this point we just need to start over with our core.

I used them bc u were comparing him to Schieffle
No one here has said ROR is a superstar
But u calling him average is more off base than however much his Rep MIGHT be inflated

Bottom line...
he’d score more with better wingers
AND
he’d be “more efficient” if we had a 3rd or 4th line that could take some defensive minutes away from him

I don’t think either of those statements are arguable
Seems like common sense

Is he overpaid?
Sure, but what good player WON’T we have to overpay?

O’Reilly is a GOOD player
We need MORE of those... not less

- jdfitz77

I think I could go on record and say ror is a star.
He is a nhl star hockey player.
Made an all star appearance.

Not a superstar though.

Ror is a consistent profession nhl star hockey player who wins faceoff frequently

Toews is the best Center and defensive center on Chicago.

In Chicago, Toews is matching up against Jack. Same with Crosby, Backstrom etc.

A lot of #1 C’s are also the best defensive centers.

Eichel will develop in that area over time IMO

no im not going to do an hours worth of research just to get a "faceoffs lives matter" post for 10 pages.

And you do get how competing in this league works right? first you build a team on good value, cost controlled etc and then you pay the cup tax. the guys that are worth keeping after those years, they get a raise. the guys that haven't, are part of the sell off, like Byfuglien with Chicago.

I think you’re confusing that with Brad May
Pretty sure he got a shot to play with them
And i think he had around 20goals too
Wasn’t May a 1st round pick as well?
Probably why he got the chance,
even though he eventually settled into his role as a 4th liner

Can anyone remember better than us who played with 16 & 89?

- jdfitz77

May for sure
Craig Simpson from Edmonton got a shot
Slow dave on the PP
Adam Creighton?
Randy wood?

Ok...
but you’re kinda acting like ROR will be useless in 3 years
I think that’s doubtful
Lot’s of players are now really good into their mid-30s

But again,
(and I’ve said this over & over)
it’s gotta be a great return for ROR,
not just spare parts

Has to bring us back a “core” player

Who do u think might be a guy we could get?

I am. I’m on the same side as you on this. Idk, I like ROR for what he is to the team I think he plays a big part. Unless he is a DB that I don’t know about.

Okposo is terrible imo. Shouldn’t be on the PP, he can’t pass for crap. Bad decisions. Horrible signing by GMTM. I’d play him on the 4th line and say see how many goals you can score regardless of what he is getting paid at this point. Should never be playing on a line above ERod.

I try not to say stuff like that,
and “core”
Bc ppl have such different definitions

The argument to trade ROR isn’t his salary (bc we will have to overpay any good players), and it’s not his production...

It’s whether or not O’Reilly will still be a good player when he’s 30-35 & we are “ready to compete”

If the answer is “no”
Then ok...
makes sense to explore a trade

Just have to get the right return
Not a sh!tty one like we got for Kane

Not useless, but if things go as planned and Mittelstadt, Nylander, Smith and whoever else actually pan out, O’Reilly might need to go to pay those guys who are 6-7-8 years younger.

I don’t think Ryan O’Reilly the #2 Center kills your team.

I think Ryan O’Reilly being your 2nd best player means your destined for mediocrity at best.

They need to do better in the core department.

Yet Winnipeg has managed to build a Cup Contender around the overpaid Byfiglien

And I’m not asking you to do any research

You apparently think we can trade ROR for cost controlled player(s) who can be part of the future here
Just asking for examples of guys u think we could get for him

Is that really such an unreasonable question?

U wanna trade ROR...
Ok... FOR WHO?

I think you’re too harsh on Okposo
Play him with Jack next year
If he bounces back,
then he’s either usable or tradable
If not,
Then i guess we are stuck with him until the expansion draft or maybe a compliance buyout after the lockout in 2020

I can't predict the future. All i know is right now he's a bad value contract. If you can get value (be it picks, prospects or roster players) you do it.

Idk if the Habs have anyone we want
At least not on defense
Galchenyuk?

Blues have some young defensemen
Dunn? Edmundson?

Chychrun from the Yotes?
Idk if they’d move him

Can’t really think of young defensemen that Nj or NyR would/could part with off the top of my head
