That's why they get work visas and/or become dual citizens. Drafted for military service? The hell are you talking about? They have entire teams of people working for them to guarantee they don't pay a cent more than they have to. - Unholy_Goalie
You said it - they still have to pay.

in the far fetched scenario that Tavares will not sign with Leafs, quite sure Kovalchuk will sign 2-3years with Leafs to replace JVR.
Tavares will sign a 7y @8million contract with Leafs.
Matthews 8y @8.5mln
Marner 8y @7mln
Nylander 6y @6mln
Fair deals if all get a NTC or NMC. |

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-investor/personal-finance/taxes/american-expats-in-canada-heres-how-to-make-sense-of-filing-us-taxes/article19217822/
The US is the only western country in the world that imposes tax on its citizens regardless of where they live and no matter where income is earned. Most countries require only residents to pay tax. If you exit Canada, for example, you don't have to file any more Canadian tax returns.
Depends on your residency so if he isn't a Canadian resident, I guess not.
And I didn't make the chart. CapFriendly does it.

But when they are working in Canada they have to pay the tax.

You think Matthews takes a cent less than 10? You're likely 2mil short on him.
Tavares is getting more than 8mil. |

Greater than 183 days, not less than.
A player is going to be in the US from September to April, May or June, if not longer. That's 8 to 10 months a year outside of Canada, therefore, exempt from Canadian taxes. - Unholy_Goalie
If you own property in Canada you're still deemed a Canadian citizen. |

Just a few pages into this thread and all I've read is UG going off about Taxes and Privacy
Players that want to move teams to a top contender know that they will more than likely have to take a bit of a pay cut.
These players are already rich, and will only get more rich. I'm sure a tiny tax rate difference isn't going to be the decider. Or privacy for that matter.
The 2 main things I see him preaching every post |

When Matthews, Marner, and Nylander's ELC's come to an end. I guess we better say bye-bye.
They will be signing to a city with better taxes and more privacy no doubt.

Matthews might take a bit more. but I think not over 9.25mln.
Tavares can get 10+mln (e.g. Montreal or a team like Rangers, Buffalo).
But IF he signs with Leafs, I think it will be around 8million.
He will be able to get 2million more in sponsorship deals for sure.
And being introvert doesn't mean wanting to live in a basement without any social contact, UG |

Leafs will never ever be able to sign any free agents because of the high tax rates. All free agents will be signing with Dallas, Nashville, Florida, Tampa Bay or Vegas. These 5 teams will be taking turns winning Stanley Cups for the next 20 years. |
