I know right?
Sometimes a kid needs to experience the fire to fully understand what it is he needs to do to survive. But sometimes you can't really learn if you stay in the fire, you just end up burning to death.
So they took him out of the fire and let him apply the lessons in a less dangerous environment.
This way, when he came back, he was better equipped.
Im not saying it is this way for every player or prospect, but I will defer to the organization, who saw him every day on and off the ice, and made the decision accordingly.
Sorry about the metaphors...... - MBFlyerfan
I am fine with deferring to the organization, but don't be silly and act like they planned it that way. Hakstol scratched the poop out of him and Hextall sent him to the AHL so he could play. He has played better once they needed to call him back up. He played at the level that was expected after seeing him develop for 3 years. For that we are grateful.
They didn't put magic seasoning on him to turn him into something he wasn't going to be. I don't think they did what was best for him or for themselves, but it will work out just fine.

However, he is only 19 and we have a long way to go before the organization ruins him completely through their ineptitude. - MBFlyerfan

People on these boards seem to be unaware that developing each individual player is not an exact science, and far from it. Yes, Sanheim had maybe what you would call an unorthodox year between playing and the AHL/NHL time but he looks to have taken things in stride and he is playing well. Stop complaining about how he was handled, looks pretty damn good out there so what is there to complain about? |

Amac had a horrible game last night at times. He could not get the puck out when he had time and space and had many shots blocked. But I was meaning more to the pairing of Amac and Manning, Yes I know Hak depends on Amac, but you have to put your best overall defenseman out there Provorov and not Manning. - Buzzo
I only saw the first period and MacDonald had a few moments in the first. You need more than two defenseman. |

I'm not sure what the reasoning behind this was. maybe they were trying to see if he could work through it but were not seeing what they needed to see for him to get back in the show?
It wasn't ideal that is for sure.

Also, he didn't "rot" in the press box. He practiced daily with the team and worked with the coaches. I'm sure he learned a lot of lessons that he was able to apply in the AHL and now in the NHL.

Of course they didn't plan it that way. Why would you even think that is what I am trying to say?

Stick to the narrative. We are apparently all being silly.

Complaining? lol. You literally just quoted a post saying "for that we are grateful"
I am calling it how I see it based on everything I have seen (which includes a lot of non-NHL and non-Flyers). If the Flyers did everything right they'd be in a different position than they currently are. |

Hence why I said at times, the desperation plays you mentioned were because of times he turned the puck over. Many times he had time and space behind his net and would make a terrible pass or try to move the puck up the boards to be turned over many times. I remember one shift we had a ton of pressure on Col and were cycling and G dropped it to Amac at the point and he had time, he hesitates to make a play and decides to shoot only to have it blocked and Col counter attacked. - Buzzo
There are a lot of issues with fans looking at plays defenseman make and labeling them giveaways. Sometimes it's fair and sometimes it's not.
The question often is, does the defenseman have an available outlet? A defenseman may have time but does he have an outlet? Why is he hesitating? Often times especially when under a heavy forecheck such as when the opposition has pulled the goalie and outnumbered a defenseman will often to alleve pressure and keep it out of the middle of the ice and put the puck up the wall into a puck battle. It's often the only option a defenseman has. The opposition will knock it down or win the puck battle. Or a forward will be out of position and not be an available outlet and the defenseman will be criticized for the giveaway when often he makes the only play available to him and the safest play by keeping the puck along the wall and further from the net. Life as a defenseman. |

There is never a situation with a young player that is etched in stone or every move planned to a T, so your comment of don't be silly and act like they planned it that way is disingenuous and ironically very silly. You cat like the coaches both in the NHL and at the AHL level had zero to do with his growth and development and getting better at his weaknesses. Also a silly statement. With the exception of not sending him down right away the Flyers have done a strong job developing Sanheim just as they have with all their young players.

You're making his point for him. You can't look at a lot of non-NHL and non-Flyers and use that as a basis for criticism. The situation is different for every player and there is no set development path. If the Flyers did as much wrong as a lot of posters on this board think they do, they'd be in a different position than they currently are.
