Grandlund - Shink trade too. But i take your point.

too me it's a low risk move for potential for high reward.

- dbot

It's a move that would have made more sense for a team on its upswing or currently in its window. Not one that's at least 3 years away if everything goes perfectly, which obvy it will.

Every single GM would be fired on the spot if at the start of the year they said "We ain't winning this year, no playoffs, may as well start the tank Game 1"

McDavid draft year

Buffalo was all in

Still got Eichel. Too bad Murray made some terrible moves though.

From Hf:
I was listening to the Fan 960(in Calgary) and they had John Shannon on and were talking about management issues and coaches that may be fired, and this is what John Shannon said:

- April 9th 2018 will be known as Black Friday in the NHL because 8-10 coaches maybe fired.

- There will be a domino effect, where one coach is fired and teams want a shot at that coach. And John Shannon said that coach maybe Joel Quenneville.

- There is a power struggle in Chicago between Joel Quenneville and Stan Bowman, it is hard to know who has the hammer but not both of them will be there, one of Joel Quenneville or Stan Bowman will be let go. Joel Quenneville does not see eye to eye with Stan Bowman, Joel Quenneville was not happy about Saad for Panarin.

- Darryl Sutter has offers from 2 teams, Darryl Sutter wants to coach. John Shannon knows the 2 teams but he refused to say which ones they were.

- There maybe 1 or 2 surprise firing that will come out of field left, he said not say much here.

- Ken Holland will have the chance to decide for himself if he wants to stay in Detroit, according to John John Shannon, he has heard 3 stories over the last 3 weeks and they are 1.) Ken Holland will resign in Detroit. 2.) Ken Holland will not be resigned in Detroit. 3) Ken Holland will become the GM of the new Seattle team. John Shannon mentions that he expects Ken Holland will be in Detroit, by trading Tomas Tatar for picks, it sends a message that Ken Holland will be in Detroit.

- Edmonton will make a change at the GM position or in the coaching position.

Please note that is not from me but from John Shannon, I missed some of the interview but when I got in my car to go to work,I turned on the radio to Fan 960 and this was on.

Any guesses to the 8-10 coaches that will be fired?

I’m sceptical about John Shannon as an insider but this is fun speculation.

God I hope Edmonton keeps Chiarelli

Except teams and GMs have done this frequently. They've done it in Toronto, Edmonton, Buffalo, Detroit, Phoenix, Tampa, Winnipeg, Calgary. They use politician words like "This year might hurt a bit. something something won't be bring in a lot of outside help. we'll do what we can but we're committed to the long term growth first and that's our goal blah"

Yeah, TO did do it when Shanahan took over.

And TO is a more hostile market than Van

This is just long form version of informed random twitter speculation from a guy who gets paid to talk.

It was nice of him to bring a bunch of it together in one place, but that's all old news depending on who your hockey follows are.

I can see Calgary trying to get a name coach. They've gone the cheap route for years it keeps failing surprisingly.

I get a kick out of Vancouver being considered hostile.

Vancouver fans: TRADE FOR A DRAFT PICK PLEASE YOU DUMBASS
Eastern media: wow so hostile

Eastern media: BERGEVIN SHOULD BE FIRED.
Buffalo fans: OUR TEAM IS LITERALLY DEATH
Toronto fans: IS KYLE DUBAS ACTUALLY A DUMBASS?
Montreal fans: PACIORETTY SHOULD BE TRADED FOR NOT BEING FRENCH AND NOT GIVING HIS KIDS FRENCH NAMES
Ottawa fans: We hope the owner dies so someone else takes over the team
Eastern media: They're just passionate.

Interesting stuff if any of it is true.
The Chicago speculation sounds somewhat credible.
Would love to see Edmonton fire everyone.
Montreal should clean house, too.
This off season should be entertaining on many fronts.

That's the only clear tank i recall in an actual hockey market that couldn't be like, we're Buffalo (or Edmonton) and nobody wants to play here.

Demote JB to head scout.
Hire Ken Holland.

Fire Green.
Hire Quenville.

Players want to play for winning teams and where they get money. When the Canucks were winning they weren't many NTC lists and did well in FA.

The city is (frank)ing gorgeous and a great place to live. Tax situation isn't even all that bad compared to a lot of cities.

You think living in Detroit was glamorous when they were good? Columbus? St Louis? Ottawa? (frank) no. Winnipeg sucks Richard and so does Edmonton from October to April. But when guys see a chance to win and make their money they'll deal with it.

Now they're bad and what a surprise that guys who get to pick where they go aren't jumping on a landmine.

I honestly believe it’s just a manufactured excuse the Linden fanboys in the media fed the fanbase knowing that ownership/management didn’t want to fall out of playoff contention and wanted to try to take shortcuts to keep the team afloat.

Both players were 21/22 yrs old and on ELCs - lots of potential and much better than scrubs like Higgins, Mathias, Vey, Richardson, Kenins - it made perfect sense.

2014 draft
Viktor Arvidsson 40 pts in 50 games (20 years old) 4th round -SHL
Brayden Point 91 pts in 72 games 3rd round -WHL
Danton Heinen 62 pts in 59 games 4th round -BCHL
2013 draft
Jake Guentzal 73 pts in 60 games 3rd round -USHL
Mattias Janmark 31 pts in 55 games 3rd round -SHL
2012
Shayne Gostisbehere 22 pts in 31 games 3rd round -College
Colton Parayko 42 points in 53 games 3rd -AJHL
2011
Johnny Gaudreau 72 points in 60 games -4th round -USHL
Ondrej Palat 96 points 61 games 7th round -QMJHL
2010
Mark Stone 28 pts in 39 games 6th round -WHL
Brendan Gallagher 81 points in 72 games 5th round -WHL

The best couple players outside of the top 2 rounds in the NHL from these drafts. A lot of these players may have fallen for a reason but just looking at their point totals. They probably shouldn't have.

I hope that JB stops picking players like Kristoff Gunnarsson, Abols, Mckenzie types.

No, not an exact science

Maybe Higgins at one point - but you're not seeing upside to signing those two? Granlund was put in a checking role this year so its easy to pass judgement on his numbers, Svens improved every year since joining the team, put up better numbers than Mathias ever did, and when those two guys joined the team Higgins was on his way out, passed through waivers, we couldn't give him away.

Look at it this way, if we hadnt of had either SB, MG then guys like Zalewski, Friesen, Grenier, Bancks would of been in the lineup instead.....or we could've signed 2 overpriced UFAs instead, isnt that what teams on the upswing do?

I honestly think having more plugs like Kenins/Chaput/Megna/Biega/Grenier + draft picks they traded instead of Granlund/Vey/Pedan/Clendening/Sven/Larsen would be more beneficial to this team long term.

Sven is the only one who will maybe be here for the long haul imo. And he’s the only one who’s really benefited one of the “next wave” players(Bo). One or more of those traded picks could have turned out to be a useful future teammate for Brock and Bo.
