Agree with this 100 pct. Totally understand that Hakstol was playing the percentages and that Giroux has had very little success in shootouts in recent years (7 for his last 39, 0 for 6 this year). But with the game on the line, I want the puck on Giroux's stick every time. If you fail with your best player, so be it.

Ha, if I'd have backread a nit more before replying to MJL, I could have just reference this post. Spot on, as always Meltz!

Weal entered last night 4-for-9 in shootouts for his NHL career, including 2 goals this season. So he hadn't been awful in shootouts at all, although last night's attempt turned out to be an ugly-looking one.

But I do agree that you have to give Giroux one of the first two spots (to guarantee that he will get to shoot).

- bmeltzer

What are Jake's shootout stats? I don't have an overly favorable impression of him in the skills competition, but maybe the numbers tell a different story. He seems to get the nod a lot.

Yeah I agree I just don't want to dabble in the Weise type market. I think that role can be filled internally. All the guys mentioned for forwards can place top 6 if needed but are better slated on the third line. They all bring different dimensions whether it be physicality or PK.

If we could move on from Neuvirth I would be highly interested in a goalie as well to split with Elliot. If they succeed they could be the guy we pair with our young goalies moving forward. If they trust lyons/stoly is ready for the big show that's fine too.

- Tfaehner

I agree, no more Dale Weise level players. It can be a tricky market when trying to keep the cost down.

Semantics. In a do over, Hak puts G out there 10 times out of 10. That is just a spot where you want the game on the captain's stick.
- Lexington Flyer

No semantics involved. Hakstol has not used Giroux in shootouts multiple times this season. There is a case percentage wise for no using Giroux. I think sometimes stats should be thrown out the window and go on other intangibles.

Quality straw man there!

I'm not making a blanket statement, I'm correcting a blanket statement that was made that was incorrect. I challenge you to prove me wrong. Good luck.

- MJL

Why don't you prove it to him and give an example of a pending UFA whose rights were traded before signing an 8 year contract under the current CBA?

Let's be honest. Frans Neilsen could have switched sweaters and taken all three shots and the Flyers would still be going home with the SOL. A curse is a curse.

I would love to see Stoli or Lyon as the backup next year. Definitely a realistic chance of it at this point. Neuvirth should be gone and Mrazek should not be resigned.
- mickel25

Well at least we know if Neuvirth is around they'll still get that chance. I am legitimately interested in seeing what they do. I am hoping Neuvirth is traded myself because I don't want starts taken away from Stolarz/Lyon/Hart

My daughters would love if Aaron Dell was signed. Apparently, his name is where Elsa and Anna live?

Also, the first two goals were 180 foot rushes by Detroit. That just cannot happen.
- Scoob

why is that virtually every single oddman rush against us ends up in the net, whether it's a shot or a pass to the open forward? conversely, why is it that virtually every one of ours, regardless of a 2 or 3 on 1, turns into a pathetic display of tripping over our own feet and the puck not even getting on goal.

it is incredible that this happens over and over and over and over and over. just like our abject failure in the shoot out.

There doesn't need to be an example. It is possible for a team other than the islanders to sign Taveras to an 8 year contract. That is an indisputable fact.

I am uplifted by the comeback win.

I am downtrodden by the first 2 periods, especially the first.

This team is gonna surprise everyone in the playoffs because they play splendidly again good teams ah tell ya hwhut

on a positive note, there is a distinct absence of shambles.

According to writers at the flyers optional practice today Neuvirth is full participant and he is absolutely killing it. Apparently looks much better than mrazek in all the drills. Maybe playoff Neuvirth is showing up for our stretch run?

It's okay, you don't need to post that your statement of "Tavares can't get more than 7 years from a team other than the Islanders" is wrong. We already know it was. Player rights for players who are about to walk as a UFA are frequently traded before July 1. It's a very feasible possibility.

46 points for Michigan this year, idk if a third rounder is gonna be much better than that prospect wise.

Free agents I would sign at the right price...

Backlund - If you must improve our centers Backlund is excellent defensively and could slot in at 3c. I don't know what he's expecting contract wise but I imagine he will cost at least 3x4 for 12. AT LEAST.

Perron/Maroon/Grabner - Guys who bring different things to the wing position which is an area we can afford to improve on. All 3 can play up and down a lineup. They all add a different dimension this team could use. I wouldn't again go more than 2-3 years and depends on cap hits.

Raanta/Dell/Hutton - Both look like guys who could succeed with increased playing time. Raanta has been great for a dreadful Arizona team. Dell honestly looks like he could be the starter in San Jose but money talks and with Jones extension in place he isn't going anywhere. Dell will probably look for a team that can provide him with 35-40 starts next season. Hutton has had a great year but who knows if it'll continue at his age.

Enstrom/ Johnson / Emelin / Hamhuis - Insert aging veteran d man here. If we think we must have another veteran d man in the lineup with Amac (which I don't find necessary with the emergence of provy and gost as a legit top pairing) these guys all fit the bill of short term potentially low cost guys.

BiggE how did I do?

- Tfaehner

Not bad, wouldn’t have any interest in adding veteran D though. Hoping to move Gudas and just replace with Morin.

I wouldn’t mind finding a better veteran center than Filppula for next season, but I really don’t want anyone who would be under contract beyond 19-20. Certainly wouldn’t mind adding a decent winger though, especially if Simmonds is moved at the draft.

He is having a good year but has a long way to becoming a viable NHL prospect. Similar to trading, let's say, Vecchione for a 3rd. Gets back the pick they lost for Mrazek. Plus he goes to Michigan, so he sucks

It also seems like every dam deflection winds up in the Flyers net. Although the Flyers have gotten a few deflection goals recently.

Everything about the future concerning what happens with Taveras is a hypothetical.
