Can we agree that Tavares is a really talented player?
Depending upon the young player they are 1-5 years away from getting paid. Provorov is the only one that will get a huge contract. Tough decisions would have to be made eventually but the Flyers would have no problem fitting his contract.
Also, will any of Frost, Patrick or Coots be as good as Tavares at any point in there career? Probably not. This team would be a cup favorite within a year if Tavares was added. - mickel25
if there wasn't a salary cap, sure but you have Giroux and Voracek making 16.5 between them. giving a 27 yo Tavaras 10 plus for 7 years is just too much when you will have others to sign, esp Provorov. w/o a cap hell yes I would love to have him

Love JT, off the chart hockey IQ amd he is heavy on the puck but no thank you. Stay with the plan and make the right trade for the right piece. I hate them but Pitt does it right...

The Pens have Crosby, Malkin, Kessell, LeTang all signed. Around $34mil between the four players. If the Flyers signed Tavares and gave Provorov a raise they would be probably be around $36mil. 12 to Tavares and 8 to Provorov + G and Voracek.

Why can't they do it? - mickel25
Because we aren't a 4 player team. And we have more affordable options than Tavares already. If you're spending you spend on a position of need, you do it with a position you don't have a young affordable option for. Tavares does NOT make the current roster a cup contender.

It's okay, you don't need to post that your statement of "Tavares can't get more than 7 years from a team other than the Islanders" is wrong. We already know it was. Player rights for players who are about to walk as a UFA are frequently traded before July 1. It's a very feasible possibility.

Tavares will be good but this is becoming and younger league, flyers don’t need to lock in on a contract like that, I get a strange feeling there will be better options

The Pens aren't a 4 player team either. Didn't they win a cup without LeTang? My point is they can afford it if they want to. They would need to continue to draft and develop well but I think that is pretty much a lock.
Bottom line Tavares is a top player in the league and would make this team much better now and the future.

When was the last time a superstar player's rights were traded to another team then said team signed said player for 8 years?
It's not feasible, it's just another supremely unlikely possibility.

They can do it, it just wouldn't be smart to do it.

In response to "If he leaves Islanders he will be getting 12/13+ per year for 8+ years." it was a very reasonable statement. Get over yourself

Do you think Giroux and Voracek are the same as Crosby and Frankenstein?

No I do not. But a line up that included Tavares, Patrick, Coots and Laughton at center would be able to compete with the Pens and have a realistic shot at winning.

You're wrong, it is certainly feasible. UFA rights are trade quite frequently. That's how the Flyers got Kimmo Timmonen. - MJL
He said "superstar". Also, the contract max length rule has only been around for a few years. So it has not happened yet that the rights of a superstar player have been traded for a team to be able to add a year to the contract proposal. Not impossible that it would happen but has not happened yet.

I realize what he said. That's just a parameter he threw out there to change the context.
The statement was Taveras CAN"T get more than 7 years from any team other than the Islanders. That is false.
