Let's be honest. Frans Neilsen could have switched sweaters and taken all three shots and the Flyers would still be going home with the SOL. A curse is a curse.

The fact it even had to go to a shoot out against this piss poor Detroit team is pretty damning in and of itself.

I mean Howard did have a really good game in net for Detroit combined with 3 or 4 posts from us. If we got equal goaltending would of been 4-2 us imo.

I am hoping they try that next time though

I don't care what Giroux's record is on the shootout, he is your best player who has the best hands and has had a great season. The coach must be putting him out there every opportunity. There really is no excuse for it.

Totally agree, he has to shoot. I don't care if Hak tells him to shoot or not he tells Jordan Weal to get back on the bench. Most skilled player has to go

Agreed. And I'm quickly starting to add Patrick to this conversation too. Kid has some of the sickest moves on the team. He'll start burying them eventually. I would run G, Patrick, and whoever has the highest SO percentage every time personally.

A. Happy for Matt Read. He's played well IMO since his recall. Glad he got rewarded with a goal.

B. A lot of anger towards Mrasik. While I think he needs that first goal, it was a well placed shot. So was the short-handed goal as well. The 3rd goal, he got a bit scramblely in net. He needed to be pulled though, if only to wake up the team.

C. Lyon has played well lately, whether in relief or through a start. I would come back with him on Thursday.

D. Elliott can't come back soon enough.

E. This team needs to find away to win shootouts. Fact is, if they could have come away with only 2 more wins in them, got a clear in the 30 seconds of the Boston game to earn at least a point, they would be tied for first. Very frustrating. I agree with MJL, why G didn't have an attempt in the SO is beyond me.

Excuse is the wrong word but there is absolutely a reasonable explanation for not using Giroux. He's simply been awful at the shootout in recent usage. I still would put the game on his stick and I disagree with the shootout choices but that doesn't mean that there wasn't reason behind the choices.

It seems that way. Flyers are in a lot of shootouts. When you watch some of the opposition they skate in, look confident and have a plan and execute it. I think it's mental. Flyers skate in, seem indecisive and don't make good attempts. The Weal attempt is a perfect example. He got in so deep before trying a shot that he was a n easy poke check.

Agree with this 100 pct. Totally understand that Hakstol was playing the percentages and that Giroux has had very little success in shootouts in recent years (7 for his last 39, 0 for 6 this year). But with the game on the line, I want the puck on Giroux's stick every time. If you fail with your best player, so be it.

Newsflash, everyone on the team has been awful in the shootout. What is our best guy 2-8? Giroux needs to shoot, doesn't matter if he missed his last 7, it's game 74 of the year and we need the point.

Weal entered last night 4-for-9 in shootouts for his NHL career, including 2 goals this season. So he hadn't been awful in shootouts at all, although last night's attempt turned out to be an ugly-looking one.

But I do agree that you have to give Giroux one of the first two spots (to guarantee that he will get to shoot).

The first two goals, while very good shots, were very stoppable. Mrazek played them poorly. Third one was a Keystone cops scene by Mrazek. I'd start Lyon for the next few games.

As far as the shootout selections. I understand going with the percentages but in that situation I want to put my best player and captain out there.

Yep

I think I hurt myself rolling my eyes when I saw Weal out there.

Unless you got a nielsen or oshie type of ringer I look at it like Jake g tk/patrick are our best offensive weapons. I roll with them. Jake had a great attempt just didn't get it quite high enough. If you roll g Jake than go weal cause we got 2 misses than fine.

Also, the first two goals were 180 foot rushes by Detroit. That just cannot happen.

His last few attempts have been ugly, thankfully they got a point out of that. Florida and Columbus are rolling, the Devils have done well on that west coast trip too. Sharks helped us out last night though. Do the Devils keep going back to Schneider? I did not watch the game last night but box score says he didn't do well, wasn't playing well prior to injury either.

3 games left with Boston, actually.
- bmeltzer

but it seems they also have a lot of soft games? I didnt see many back to back. surprising since they played so few games.

Though their last game is a btob against the Bruins, I hope the B's are still playing for something.

Devils are 4-6 in their last 10 on a 2 game skid. We are 3-5-2. The other teams in the conference are rolling at .600 or better.
