If his contract could be fit in as a 3rd C then that's great. If they need a couple mil in savings then he's expendable and would bring back a significant return. Improvements are a good thing.

You are creating a hole in the team where you would need to look to fill that hole immediately after trading him. at 4.5 million you can't get a C even close to as good.

Not if in 2 years you have someone cheaper who could the 3rd line role.

I dont think he is saying....trade Kadri now.....but if they sign JT, then Matthews, Marner, Nylander pays raises for other players etc....there's only so much money you can spend on the forwards.
Kadri is a great deal and great player right now for the leafs....but as with other teams...If JT signs.....some fav players could be moved out to reallocate money elsewhere.
Its not crazy to think a 3rd line center on a great contract could be moved in several years to get back pieces for another area.

It would be great to have Matthews, JR/Seguin and Kadri for the next 5 years.....but who knows.

I dont care what he does off the ice. And yes, when he was younger, into new money and just came off a cup win...he indulged and was a jerk. Happens all the time.
From all accounts he's currently a good teammate and great player.....whatever helps the leafs win a cup.
