I agree with you Pat. Mostly about Toronto's biggest strenght being their forward depth. They REALLY have 3 lines with skilled players that can score.

Marleau is only signed for 3 years.... by the team he's done, the Leafs will need his salary to pay the younger guys.... it's no big deal and he does play a good role model for them.

I'd understand letting JVR leave, but I think it would be quite the risk. Brown and Kapanen MIGHT replace his production but this is far from a guarantee.

I would keep him if I were in charge.... unless the price goes ridiculously too high of course.

- Scabeh

I want to keep JVR too, he has a unique skillset.. No matter what the advanced stats say about him, he scores goals which, ultimately is the most important stat there is.. I just don't want the Leafs to be the team that offers him a 7yr/$49M deal.

but they are not, and we're still 42-22-7. This team doesn't rely on 1 player only.
- PatC80

But we could be ...........44 -20-7

i'd pass on that term but not because he's a bum, and not without realizing that losing him will suck.
- daeth

All teams move on from players like him. Sucks it's now a career year in goals for the guy.

Bob Mackenzie said yesterday the best time to get a big hometown discount is the year prior to UFA. So last summer they should have locked him up if they wanted to keep him on the cheap.

I don't think it's a good idea to have a 39 year old guy standing in front of the net on powerplays.
- Atomic Wedgie

Wha? JVR is one of our softest players and he stands there...he's got great hands...but I'm pretty sure Marleau and his 160 pp goals are still able.

We talk a lot about these big money contracts and we never talk about how good the agent has it. Don't they make like 10% of the contract? I assume it's annual so if JVR currently makes 4.5 million his agent is getting like $450,000?!

Edit: Depends on the league. NBA and NFL cap them at 3% and NHL and MLB have no cap. Damn son. Time to change profession.

JVR is a lazy trashbag who cherrypicks goals in the crease.

Hard pass on a 6x6 contract for that bum

That moment when you remember Joe Thornton once scored 7 goals in a season with 5 being Empty Netters.

Then seeing Henrik Sedin has 2 goals this year.

That's only because he doesn't take the easy route and get all those garbage goals in front of the net.

As per Darren Dreger;

And that seems unlikely when you look at Auston Matthews being top priority. Then you’ve got Mitch Marner and you’ve got William Nylander and only a limited amount of cap space. But the market value for van Riemsdyk is also very significant. When we look at free agent frenzy, well you’re going to see John Tavares’ name at the top of that list on that graphic and then you’re going to see JvR. He’s a $6 million-plus player on a seven-year term according to some teams, and if he goes slightly under, maybe on a five or six-year term, then he’s probably closer to $6.5 million.”

Seems like we can't afford JVR, with or without Marleau

I did get a good laugh out of that the other day - I think it was an Ottawa fan saying that JVR only scores the easy goals.

So why doesn't everyone just score the easy goals?

Why can't I get more easy goals when I play hockey?

JVR is just a new level of genious

Marleau doesnt help it if the Leafs were to go after Tavares.
In order to get Tavares you cant re-sign JVR.

Id rather keep JVR over Marleau in that situation..but whatevs

If the Leafs can't sign Tavares or get a top 4 d man, they will likely sigh JVR.

It just seems like they want to see if they can do some other moves before committing

Tavares would be a decent replacement for JvR..

If they got Tavares I doubt they would care about making too many other moves at all this summer. Maybe a D on a 1-2 year deal

Tavares is a special player

I find it hillarious that some people on here say it's not worth it

Okay, 14 million? Yeah that is steep, but if he wants to sign on a contender he needs to take 11. 12 at the absolute highest.

Really though, if the did you can put Johnson or someone on his wing with Marner and he'd instantly be a 50-60 point player. Bailey just got paid thanks to JT.

Matthews Nylander
Tavares Marner
Kadri Marleau
FA center Kapanen

Good luck matching up with that.
